The actions and attitudes (perhaps not actual assaults) described in some of the links on this thread are intrinsically linked into accepted society, for example I just saw an advert for a soft drink like coke, which depicted a gang of men inventing a scenario so their "buddy" could "get the girl". The female was essentially an object. Women are objectified all over the place in advertising and entertainment media. So it's hardly surprising, given the level of intelligence among most humans, that this has been continued into "real life".
