• Just dropped my Fort off at Tallaght Powdercoating in Dublin, guy said he should be able to have it ready for collection tomorrow, else it's going to be 3 weeks as he's on holidays the day after and won't allow any of his employees to do nice track frames ;)

All I'm worried about now is that I've gone for the wrong colour :( RAL 7016 with pearlescent sparkle lacquer over the top, fingers crossed it'll turn out well though... Pics soon as it's home...

Sounds exciting! What's pearlescent sparkle lacquer?
I thought a pearlescent effect was achieved by two or more different layers of powdercoat?

  • Apparently they can replicate the finish on the Makino fork using a basecoat and a lacquer, so I was told anyways... Can't wait to see it though!

    !!
I was told they closest thing they can do to a "pearlescent" effect is the base colour plus a metallic lacquer over it.
I'm not complaining as I'm happy with the results (above)...

  • Fingers crossed it'll turn out pretty sweet!

  • this is a kona frame sandblasted and clearcoated. looks like silver sparkle but is just tasty steel.

  • These lads do a frame incl blasting for 40-50 quid I've just found out. yowsah. Handy resource for Belfast folks. especially when the dublin lads are getting hit with 120 euro! Universal industrial spraying.

  • Blimey, I have a lot to learn! Some of the talk in these forums is scientific. I won't even go into the colour schemes and frames.

  • RAL 1035 metallic finish

I'm very happy with it, I think it is kind of greenish gray with a little gold. My wife says it is taupey-gray.

I dropped a frame at armourtex today and they now have all the (ral) colors sampled on little sections of tubing. Really helpful.
The color that most called my attention was Ral 1035 with metallic lacquer, absolutely lovely.

Nice find mate, I've a couple of frames and was considering taking them to Dublin.

  • No mates, let me know how you get on, I might be throwing them up a frame for a winter build.

I only just found out about there and had stripped a frame by hand and rattle canned it. could have got them to do it all for me for about a tenner more ffs.

  • Here's my very first project - got the frame for 18 quid on ebay. Here's what it looked like (pic from auction listing):

Bournes Powder Coating in Birmingham. Frame and forks together - 30 quid, including sandblasting. Great job, too, and done in 2 days.

  • Will do.

Off work week after next will take a run over then.

  • Just to warn everyone that the prices at Armourtex went up last week, my frame was quoted £54 for raw finish 2 weeks ago, today I was asked £63.

  • Just finished building a new beater/pub bike-was initially going for a metallic black powdercoat but the project has been a pain in the tits so went for a rattle can job... First attempt so was keen to see how it turned out if nothing else. Much nitromorse and nowhere near enough sanding or lacquer later....

Learning from above I decided to re-spray the Concorde frame I built up for my gf's birthday and it turned out much better-a couple of small blemishes but overall pretty decent and did some lug lining myself ;) Pearlescent racing green and silver>

I like! need to run some proper fatties though, the clearance is crying for some!

  • not everyone wants a slow bike.

  • Cheers Ed,

tis a pair of dura ace track wheels running tubs that I bought off joe1983 ages ago-going to wait until I get too pissed off with them before getting them rebuilt onto clinchers I think. With the state of the roads I think some 28's might be more practical on them anyway!
