I've never heard about whether the "over tightened frame clamp and twist" method actually works for dents or not... may give it a go at home and let you know.

Hey,
Bought a frame with the intention of building up a bike for my g/f as a xmas present. Stupidly, as I was in a rush to pick it up and get back home, didn't check it out properly before buying it. (I'm an idiot, I know, I know, I'm allready kicking myself for it) I knew the general condition was a bit knackered but failed to spot a fairly large dent in the downtube. I've sanded back the rust to check how bad it was. I also put a straight edge against it to check if the whole tube was bent, seems to be out by a few mm. The whole things gaspipe, not butted tubing or anything like that. So, is it a junker? I've had a google and some people say the downtube isn't as important as the others because it's under tension not compression, but obviously I don't want to risk it if it could be dangerous, especially as it's not for me. I can save the headset, forks and bb if I scrap it, unless anyone would be happy to use it for something?
Cheers!

It's nothing, don't worry at all.
My bmx usually has a few dents in it, a lot bigger than that, top tube, downtube, stays, all usually end up with a few dents and havent had any probs riding park or decent sized trails... which I doubt your lass will be doing on this. -

Hi,
I can fill dents with silver brazing and other techniques for £15 each.
I have built frames, and I'm in Homerton, E5.Matt

I might take you up on that, I have a dent in the top tube of my Reynolds 853 fillet brazed frame, it's sizable enough to annoy me, but not to cause any structural issues. Have you got any pics with examples of your work? I'm guessing the frame would need a respray after the work?

How would the silver soldering cope with sand blasting and the powder coating
-

Silver is the right way.
Sandblasting is done before the repair. Afterwards it's not really necessary. Perhaps very light shotblasting. Will not harm the silver.
All it needs is filing and sanding.
Powdercoating is no problem. Also possible is (resin) filler, but that's not an option if you want to powdercoat.

If you don't want to powdercoat, then car body filler. Roughen paint around dent, spread on filler, sand smooth, primer, paint, finished.

thinking of buying this seems a bit of a bargin but just a lil worried about the top tube dent. does anyone think its going to be an issue??
and is it hard/worth getting dents like this removed??

not an issue. PITA to remove, either replace top tube or just fill, both require paint.

cool nice one think i'll go see it and go from there......

I agree
Doesnt look like an issue structurally. Making filling the most logical option. This is resonably cheap to do, but will mean repainting the area, and I really liked the paintjob on that frame.
Could be a proper hipster and tie a handkerchief around it ;)

so the guy with the RIH frame didnt want to talk at all so that one has gone by the by. looking at this gazelle road frame, but once again another dent.......
what do you think to this??

looks like a front end collision if you check the head tube angles out,
Ive got one similarly less bad, and apart from the headset always getting play in it after a time it rides fine, other dents like the picture, steel will be alright,
(withdraws to wait for legions of posters telling me I m suicidal) -
• #149
looks like the tube is bent on the other side looking at it closer, probably not worth the risk of a face plant when the frame gives way underneath me........

does anyone know if this dent in the top tube is fixable?http://images3.bilder-speicher.de/show.php?type=image_org&id=10081120145526
If that works it's indeed a work of genius.
I might not have to slaughter my neighbours family yea unto the third generation if I can get some dents out of the side of my car.
