oh and I've got some rims for the build if you want them, and some other stuff too http://www.lfgss.com/thread47870.html

could do with a 144BCD crankset and BB (English thread)...
On a loan basis;
Shimano UN54 107mm, or a Campag 102mm (ISO). I'll need to know quickish as I'm away for a bit, and could leave them under a bin... No cranks though.

And I could do with one of those risers mentioned for the polo loaner bike if anyone wants to donate. ;)
I encounter a (un)reasonable amount of abuse on my short-ish commute but it's mostly because I swear like a trouper at people who cut me up /endanger my life. I can't think of a single slanging match that has had a sexist slant though.

my wife gets all sorts of sexist trouble on her bike if she even dares to show even the smallest bit of skin. This even happens when carrying our 1yo on the back of the bike, actually it's even worse - loads of "yummy mummy" crap.
I was of the school of "rise above it, they're all wankers" but it used to really anger and upset her. I kind of agree now though since when a horrible leering alchy type made comments to her when we were together. me shouting at him didn't really improve things.
It's happened to my GF whom I am currently gently trying to get used to riding as she's nervous, this is with me and my seven year old son all riding together and has happened twice where they've actually slowed down to 'phwoooar' her. Fucking ridiculous and doesn't exactly help her confidence on the road. I'm never sure what these people expect, do they think women are going to wave them to stop say 'thanks for the compliment, fancy a shag'?

I think you're right about the Brompton thing: chatting with pals shows that the amount of abuse you get on bikes correlates with the type of bike you ride: friends on Bromptons and Dutch bikes get heaps more abuse, perhaps because they stand out more, and those bikes are seen as "girlier".
Harold: Sorry to hear about your wife: especially that it increasses with your baby on the back. Some people are just vile.

Same for my wife. She says that both when she rode regularly (years ago), and on more occasional trips now, it's par for the course to get "lucky saddle" style drive-by harassment every time.
It's put her off riding alone, and especially outside the relative safety of the rush-hour when the lechers seem focussed on the job in hand*.
*apologies for slightly ambiguous choice of idiom :/

I used to date a very keen cyclist. Probably did more miles than most on here combined. Not once did she receive any attention on the road of a sexual nature.

...but she was dingo ugly, so maybe thats why.

You kn ow I don't do headsets or bottom brackets, I'm too creative...
Funny
After all it's her word against his in the end. We've all been there. One minute you're having a laugh and hanging out of the van window yelling Bitch and Whore and she's loving it, the next thing you know the coppers are banging on the front door, waking the kiddies and the wife up, and you're down the nick cos now she's saying you're a wanker.
Where's our human rights? Will you ffin genius. Reckon you should start one of them English Party's and get in office to represent us. 1001 Englishmen?

I'm really alarmed at what harold and andy w have said about being hassled when riding with kids. Mostly I have seen really, really considerate drivers around us when I have taken my lad out on his first, albeit very small, road experiences recently.

Yea, their kids must have asked for it

Just realise I have two decent 27" wheels lying around, anyone got an old 27" step thru frame for those wheels?

Helmet cam? I know they're dorky, and there's loads of reasons not to have one. But I've read many times how just the act of gesturing to the camera and letting the idiots know they're being filmed can have the surprising effect of making them suddenly stop being twats.

I'm off work tomorrow, so I'm happy to have a look at what people have offered and see if I can pile it into a complete bike.

[QUOTE=Khornight2;1577093
Anyway, I asked my girlfrien who has an incidence rate of about 100% when in central London (fine out in the burbs) and she very honestly said that she doesn't give much respect to other women cyclists as most of them are terrible cyclists... which started a long conversation, the out come of which was that despite never really talking about it most men respect other men, whilst women despite talking about girl power and stuff actually mostly dislike other women... Or maybe that's a heap of bullshit... But I've heard a lot of women saying they don't really like the company of other women, I've never heard a man saying he doesn't like the company of other men...[/QUOTE]
And this is relevent....?
As far as I know, she hasn't had other women yelling sexist things and trying to run her off the road. -
• #197
I took it as saying if it is the case that women don't respect other women that highly is this a possible reason why many men don't respect women on the road?
Proposing the idea so to speak.
That is how I read it.
-
• #198
really? Is that really what he means?
Can I be the first to renounce that as dumb, and so dumb as to be dangerous? Do not excuse the behavior of some men by saying that some women don't like other women. This is counter productive and extremely painful false logic.

It's inexcusable when discussing any prejudice. Divide and rule.

I'm pretty surprised to read all this to be honest, I had no idea the extent of abuse some riders receive, I've been shouted at once since I started my commute about four months ago.
I've got brakes, a chain ring, a chain, and maybe some other bits lying around I'll happily donate to the build if needed.
