No, you're wrong. Listen to Usain Bolt, for example, after he set the 100m world record at the 2008 Olympics and he was mostly talking about how much faster he felt he would be able to go in the future. It is characteristic of record breakers that they don't want to beat the previous record, they want to put down a mark which nobody else will beat for a long time to come.
