Damo: In terms of Canaries, you're talking Tenerife, right?
As far as I have read this is a great climbing location. Teide is highest mountain of Spain at 3700m or so, and the roads there go up and down.
Also, while we're at it ... maybe we need some UK based preparation beforehand.
Could look into the Peak District, the Brecon Beacons, the Lakes or Wales or so for a long weekend, in order to get some nice climbs in that are a bit longer than leith hill?

wales is appealing. and i agree. doing leith hill and ranmore a couple of times is not the only preparation i'd like to do before attempting euroclimbs.
