  • Afternoon well spent! Is that frame anodized blue?

    I have no idea, though that would be my guess, yeah. It's a lovely blue though regardless. Pretty sure it is not a powdercoat.

    Looks really tidy that, really clean and similar size to mine (HUGE! ha)

    I want to strip mine and either clear coat or gunmetal grey it with red DT sticker and red lug lining.

    Cheers... it's a bit of a beast at 24 1/2 inches but fits me just right. The colour is French Beige enamel... Think clear coat would look good.

  • The berthouds are great, solid and no rattles. Was a lot of work to fit them, ie tapping the frame, but no adjustment for over 8 months and about 1mm clearance from the tyre and frame. Plus they look a million times better than the SKS, and are really no that heavy. I'd deff recommend those

    Do you really mean 1mm between tyre and guard? That's considered rather dangerous, I believe. Easy for small stones/gravel etc to get picked up, get caught between tyre and guard, then jam the wheel. There are several accounts around of nasty accidents and even fatalities caused by this, I don't if any are true though.

    yes it has modern brakes, the mafacs were pretty useless.
    yes, it has a pump taped to it
    yes, it is filthy
    and yes, it has spokey dokeys.

    However this bike gets ridden all the time and I love it, it doesn't spend it's life hiding in the front room it spends it crawling up and flying down the dales of yorkshire! ha

  • Look like a good set-up, is your stem that high due to the drop of the bar?

  • had to raise the stem a bit to accomodate the belly I gained over winter! hahaha... will drop it down an inch when I slim back down. I ride most of the time on top of the brake levers , only really use drops on down hills and when caning it.

    Yeah it is a happy bike - my dad bought it in the 70s! originally got it off him to build a fixie (!!) thank god i didn't! over hauling my fixed bike this summer but when that's done I've got the orignal hi flange campag hubs to lace up for this, and will be on the look out for a classy seat post. Then everything is going to get a thorough clean and polish and it'll sparkle!

  • yeah, originally put 2 red striped tyres on cos dad got them for a £ each from a car boot, just as I was building it (on a budget - wheelset, brake levers, crankset - £20)... rear one split and had to be replaced in a hurry so thought I'd stick with a red stripe.

    Expect to see gum walls make an appearance when the new wheels are built.

    Not had any problems yet, i doubt anything significant could fit in the gap to cause a problem, more likely i'd say with a larger clearance that would allow a stone/gravel to fit in. I've never heard any accounts of this being a problem.

  • HAHA just realised that, no the crank wasn't attached i was just leaning it against it to take the pic. (Also explains the angle of the crank arm)

    The bottom bracket needs chasing out as i think the powercoat paint has made it impossible to get the BB back in.

  • You mean you hasn't cover the BB and other area with tape before sending it off to be powdercoated?

    Frame is an old Dawes (identified by the remnant head badge) but it's been painted in Hammerite so I have no further info. Any suggestions welcome (it's apparently Reynolds 531, and it's not too heavy at about 7lb frame, forks and seatpost).

    The wraparound seat tube seems distinctive - anyone got an idea of what model it might be?

  • Hmmm not easy to attach more than one file it seems... sorry forum newby here. Tried to show entire frame. Maybe once I'm out of the nursery... on the other hand I should just put them on flickr.
