    Okay, I may have made up/assumed the proven bit !

    What I was getting at is it is proven that it is better to crash in a car with a seat belt on that crash without a seat belt on. Whether the feeling of safety leads the driver to drive more recklessly is besides the point, the seatbelt still protects the driver (as thousands of crash tests evidence)

    There is still the same question of risk analysis and whether someone thinks they will crash, can they drive slower/more carefully etc,. If the law for seatbelts was removed would a number of people stop wearing them I wonder.
    I would continue to wear a seatbelt yet I don't wear a cycle helmet.
