Most big businesses have more cash than your average government.
Barclays provided the paint. Barclays decide which colour it is.
If one objects, then I suggest you go paint our own sections whatever colour you like.
In fact, I'm all for that.
Burnt Umber anyone?

It's on all the 'cycle super highway' banners.
Ah fair, can't remember seeing the banners. I meant that it doesn't say it on the actual cycle lanes (as far as i know).

It's fucking shit and I hate them

I now completely accept that it was originally meant to be in the 'Copenhagen' vein before Barclays got on board. I don't like their branding splashed everywhere but they paid for it (without consulting any Londoners but that's another story) so they can do what they like.
But please people, don't make me feel like I'm going mad. Don't you remember a time when you could go somewhere - a gig, a festival, a road - and not have someone screaming their logo in your face? It was still good wasn't it? We still had 'nice things' didn't we?

I didn't connect the new cycle lanes and barclays at all until this thread. doubt many will, and haven't seen barclays promoting the link.
Me neither.
The OP clearly works in BB's marketing department and this is a viral.

Whilst I agree with the last sentiment that, indeed, we are living in an imperialistic corporate age, where corporations are more powerful than governments and seek to exploit all and sundry for their own greed, you really have to chill about the whole advertising/sponsorship thing.
The way I look at it is this: Hahahaha the idiots just gave us loads of money cus they think having their logo splashed about a bit more will make me buy their products.
Just make informed choices guys.

The rest of the country's road network is sponsored by http://www.blacks.co.uk/home.html
The old bike lanes are sponsored by http://www.greensonline.co.uk/default.php -

If a huge corporation decides to do something, I have no chance.
Yes you do. Buy a share or two and attend their shareholders meetings. Then you get to raise the questions and issues you want raised, vote on things and generally, have more choice than you do with government (because you're one voice in a few thousand, not 60 million)

Good post, I agree except there is one problem with this.
Governments don't decide things anymore- corporations now do. If my government decides something, I have a small chance of doing something about it. If a huge corporation decides to do something, I have no chance.
Corporations are now running everything but apparently this is just fine.

They're such bastards arent they?
They gave loads of money for cycle lane paint works - the inhumanity of it.
They gave loads of money to get a massive public bike hire scheme up and running - the fascists.
When will the injustice ever end?
Fucks sake. First world gripes. Makes me cringe.

Think about it another way. What the fuck have Barclays got to do with biking? Nothing. Will more cyclists bank with Barclays because of it? Nope.
Would the superhighways/bike hire scheme ever launched without corporate sponsorship? Nope. If it wasn't barclays blue it could be t-mobile pink or intel blue.
Its either that or higher taxes. Woo.

I marshalled a guided ride this morning for one of the cycle superhighways. Either I'm not very observant or their branding was pretty subtle. Either way, I didn't get into work this morning with an urge to bank with Barclay's. Or maybe I'm just used to blocking that crap out...

What is wrong with the green we already have for bike lanes? It matches the colours of our city
rose tinted glasses?

A friend who used to work at Barclays capital told me once that Chief Exec John Varley helps out at a soup kitchen at weekends, but doesn't publicise the fact.

I take issue with this idea that suddenly big business has taken over and corporations run everything.
IMO this has always been the case to a lesser or greater extent.
What is your fundamental problem here - unelected bodies exercising a larger degree of control over your world than you'd like?

I do, fuckface.

Apartheid - sponsored by Barclays!
Yes banks are really nice and have all our best interests at heart.
But in the end it's just paint on a road and lots of people have made good points that made me feel like I over reacted.

Rubbish.
Individuals can't do anything. Large enough numbers can do anything. It all just comes down to whether enough ppl really give a fuck in a society with a ridiculously high standard of living.
