  • happens a lot around De Beauvoir Road / downham road. hope they catch the scoundrels

Good to know. I'm new to this biking lark and that's on my route home, will stick to Southgate Rd if it's late.

  • I recommend singing loudly. I do it a lot. Although I think it makes you look like a nutter weirdo.

Maybe that's why I always get ignored - nobody wants to bike-jack nutter weirdos.

  • This is the most middle class angst i've seen in one thread, highlights include the word "douchebag" and blaming video games.

Out of interest are you aristocratic, or one of them?

Well, my wealth and title have been handed down from father to son for generations, if thats what you mean.

  • Got a football pinged at me last night in Geenwich. Have to hand it to the little git, he got me 100% bullseye in the kisser! Luckily it was a indoor football and not heavy.

They had a wee shock when this fat, middle-aged nodder hit the anchors, turned and gave chase. They were far too quick for me though. Good job really, I was fuming. Such a lack of thought and consideration for the possible consequences.

  • Little shits.

You must really be fat if your bike has anchors instead of brakes...

  • After watching Peckham Finishing School, I don't think I'll be riding with my gilet on down walworth anymore

My turning circle is huge too!

  • I always used to ride home through Burgess park to Peckham, and sometimes late at night. On once occasion it was late, and dark, and I think to myself Ill ride the road way to be safe.

Im riding down the side of the park when from out of nowhere I get a fairly hefty blow to the top of my head. I cant see anyone around me, and didn’t hear anyone. Luckily Im earing my lid which deflects the piece of brick or rock which was thrown. Unfortunately it deflected off of my lid and directly onto my hand splitting my finger open.

I didn’t stop to see what was going on. I kept my head down and pedalled hard. Even though Id never heard about this happening I was pretty sure I didn’t want to go off in search of the people who'd done this.

My lid had a sizeable dent in it. If I wasn’t wearing a lid, the item thrown [from above] may well have knocked me out.

So in the 6 years of riding through Burgy Park, both morning and night, the only time I had any trouble was when I rode around it!

  • avoid park in the evening, always.

    not worth the risk.

  • Last winter I had a gang of youths try to hit me with snowballs. It was on caledonia road and I was riding my gf's bike, mint green old Raleigh that I just picked up for her out of town. It was about 10 kids and they all threw the snowballs at once. Only a coulpe hit my leg.
    It was kind of funny.
A few days later I was going home through a park when 2 teenagers blocked my path and told me to stop. I biked away across the grass and they threw their crowbars at me. Lucky they missed. Then I see cops pulling up to them and arresting them. The dumbasses already robbed 2 other people in the same location in the last hour. WTF. Since then I don't go through the park at night.

    umm...

Anyway, I ride around the park at 2-3am about 3 times a week (work in a bar), either Albany/Wells or Trafalgar/St Georges. This report worries me.

  • didn't read it properly, apologise.

  • Thats awful

  • Yeah, hard times ain't they?

  • I see what you did there!

  • Replying very late to this thread, but hope the OP's mate is okay. I have taken to avoiding Cable Street's 'super highway' at night as I've had things that pricked my spidey sense, although fortunately nothing has ever happened to me. I think it's best to take busy, populated roads at night; it's good common sense.

There you go sir; you've earned it.

^^And this. I'm really late seeing this so it's lame to even reply, but this annoys me. We've had an internet run-in before, but I've cut you slack. This is late, but this makes you look like a prick. Yes, I know you lived in the States for a while, but you clearly learned the wrong fucking lessons and are peddling cheap stereotypes - of which there are no shortage of ones for the UK. Cheap shots and internet posturing garner no respect.

    /rising to the bait

  • I think it's just a joke. Chill.

Back on track, when there was snow I three kidsin tooting through snowballs at me they threw from aproxamatly a metreaway and all missed. I laughted loudlyat them and rode on...

Also bike related we once had a large gang of kids try to take a bike from south polo, they had metal bars and threw things but didn't actually want to fight. Once they were bumrushed they ran away.

  • I'm chill like ben & jerry's. He's just rankled my feathers in a few threads. I know I shouldn't rise to the bait and should just let him have enough rope.

Anyhoo, I'll watch out for the real knobs out there and keep riding.

  • Was that at Bath Terrace?

Theres been a load little youts on OKR throwing water bombs recently, not really such a bad thing in this hot weather though.

Hey Im not saying it happens all the time, that was the only trouble Ive had [apart from the weird old guy talking to himself and throwing fireworks! =) ], and I agree serious caution should be taken before going through wide open empty areas [as per edscobles post].

Just throwing in my experience from cycling in that area and pointing out you need to stay aware, even when you take the 'safe option'.
