    fixed.

  • fixed.

I think I summed it up better.

  • @ Chris Borneo - LOVIN it mate, looks ace :-)

Just recently picked up some Veloflex 'Master' too, well nice hey? VERY sticky

    What are the rims?

Yeah, well happy with the Veloflex Masters. I did want Paves as I liked the logo better but now the bike's finished I think these look pretty good.

Rims are Mavic Open Pro CD same as the originals but the modern ones are a bit wider and a slightly lighter colour. I think they go pretty well with the tyres. Modern decals didn't work with the rest of the bike. Thinking of making up some reproductions of the originls.

  • welcome to the Carlton Club

Just finished the Tifosi nice frame was going to have it powdercoated but its quite a nice finish as it is Planet x forks which are really tight clearance may ned some smaller tyres, dura ace crank, dura ace hubs laced to cxp33,Thomson post and stem.

Freewheel, front brake only on both of your bikes? Why not have back brake only?

  • cos that's just not the style darling...

  • His reasoning I suspect is that this bike will have a fixed wheel transmission soon, but front and back brakes on a freewheel bicycle is still a must.

  • front and back tyres on a bicycle is a must.

Still only got a front on that blue mountain bike.

  • Freewheel, front brake only on both of your bikes? Why not have back brake only?

Trying to stir up an old discussion eh?

Is the answer because the front brake is more effective than rear when only having one. Yes, that was it.

  • as for the bar tape, i dunno, it was in the box of spares. and the singe only has a front as the back brake mount was damaged, so i cut it off, and the raleigh is gonna be fixed so i dont need a rear but would like one for emergencys.
and freewheel bikes dont need 2 brakes, my bmx has never had 2, infact its lucky it had on at all most of the time.

  • Your bmx never had 2 because it's a bmx, entirely different bicycle.

even if you have to run a brake, a rear one is a better bet than a front.

  • I want to build a wheelset using some existing components I have. They're going to be for fattish tyres - happy to use a 'road rim' - not insanely fat, maybe 32 or 35. Question: I have some MA2 and some CXP14 ... which would give a better ride? I'm assuming MA2, even though they'll be of a lesser, older, constrution type, they'll have a more useful width for these tyres... but I like the idea of a deep section rim for rougher terrain like paths and very tame off road routes. Whaddya think?

  • I think the wider rim makes better use of the wider tyre by creating the correct profile.

Not sure how noticeable it is in reality though so I would go with what looks best :-)

MA2s are box section right? Lots of pros still choose light box section rims over aero rims for the tiny extra bit of comfort on the cobbles of the Tour of Flanders and Paris–Roubaix etc, so I guess they build up plenty strong enough to take a bashing on rougher ground, despite not being deep. Also CXP14's are non-machined aren't they? Would maybe be shame to run a brake on them if so, save them for tarck?

Bollocks to the landing gear! What you putting in the cockpit?

  • It be interesting to see your 'build' skully.

  • Thanks Konijn, true the old box section for rough makes sense. Though, one rim has been worn in quite nicely for a brak anyway ... and I never ride the track! Neither rim type is machined. I like to make my own using my brak.

Bonk, yes, true it's all about the cockpit details for summer 2010. And the uniforms of the cabin crew.

Ed no build on the way, just mulleting it over.

  • Bought this frame off a fellow forumer.
Just finished the build. Decided not to go with period bits but to use up-to-date components and to lighten it as much as poss within my budget.

  • I've been watching this thread for inspiration for my road bike. Nothing. I like the look and idea of the Surly Pacer. The steelness is good, the horizontal top tube is good, the plain paint is good. But the value for money and weight is bad.

What to do, people? What to do?

  • Get an old high quality and light steel frameset for same price as Surly ?

Such as Colnago above but from a less garish maker.

  • 1+ on quality steel frame, they still ride great, and with modern component, even better.

I seen a Brian Rourke 653 steel frame go for less than £200 on ebay not long ago.
