I turned auto-routing off on my OSM install because it kept 'rearranging' carefully decided upon routes when I loaded them up. Now gpx's work just fine for me. I prefer to use .tcx though because it's nice to see the upcoming elevation profile.
Bikeroutetoaster has a nice transfer as tcx (or gpx) function that utilises garmin connect to get stuff straight on to the device, hassle free (click the Summary tab at the top of the page)
