I was in Klagenfurt a couple of years ago and watched the Ironman - total respect for those doing it. The lake's (Wörthersee) is gorgeous, totally gorgeous, so try to make sure you don't just fly in and out, and have a relax and more gentle swim/cycle in the area when it's all over. Gustav Mahler had a place over looking the lake and composed some of his best stuff there.
I can also recommend a couple of good cake shops in the town centre for the day after too ;-)
