  • a nice ride out to brands hatch with furious Tim. in the pain cave as it was hot and i take ages to warm up but once on the pilgrims way it was cooler and more enjoyable. some steep climbs at otford and a real nice bottom of the valley ride and then a bitch of a wheelie popping hill up to west kingsdown.

  • was radar jive any good? or just a shopping mall like most of the big shows?
any watt bike action to report?

  • i didn't pay to get in and just sat around for a bit on the stand a mate was working on, had a bit of a wander and watched some dirt jumping and dual-slalom and chatted to a few people i knew.
i think if you are shopping for a road bike/mtb it's a great opportunity to test ride lots of bikes in a nice environment so you can back to back compare bikes.

if you have no interest in buying bikes, mtb's or watching a bit of road racing then it's expensive just to look at a massive bike shop set up outdoors.

i had a good time though as i had somewhere to sit in the shade.

didn't see any watt bikes? not something that interests me though.

  • yeah cool, thought as much, guess the ride out and all made it a good round trip,
I was happy enough mooching around.

Had I known MrSmyth, I would of put the kettle on, those are the lanes I use the most.
Nice to hear you ventured out of RP.

  • not been in rp for a while. been restricted to weekends only but have been out windsor, surrey hills and kent way in the last weeks :-)
wish we had stopped at the ford in Eynsford it looked quite inviting in that heat.

Yes it is tempting to stop and dip a toe or more in, although with the Pub opposite its hard to get started again.

  • Picked up new bike this morning. Shop->Dad, 23mi. Lunch. Dad->Smoke, 48mi.

Fun. Easy going up, reassuring coming down, exciting on the flat. New bike features noticeably improved power transfer over old bike, but remains forgiving and jolly smooth.

However, the gears are a little spinny. This is due to an elementary oversight, which in retrospect seems bloody obvious: I failed to take sufficient care when choosing the range of sprockets on the cassette. Mr B Person made a suggestion, I came over all compliant and just nodded.

I've lost around 10" off the top (compared with my old bike), which makes an appreciable difference when on the gas. At the other end of the cassette we find territory that I don't see myself occupying until after I engage with bingo and cardigans.

On Monday I'm going to get in touch with the people what put together my new bike, in order to see if something can be done about the gearing; though I wouldn't really fault them for mentioning that I've ridden a bit on the cassette and that it's not brand new any more. Mebe a bit of Ebay will be in order. Dunno.

I wish I'd have paid better attention. I'm still getting to grips with this sort of thing and I feel like a pillock for not being more on the ball when placing my order.

Mind you, 70mi for the day on a bike that's 90% of the way to being just the ticket, followed by a stir fry with beef in it. Mebe not so bad, after all.

  • What bike did you end up getting?

  • Ah, yes. ^^Edit.

  • Got on this:

Cycled 10 miles. Had a mechanical issue + puncture (front tyre pinch flat)
    stopped and fixed
    Cycled 10 more. Swam.
Cycled 30 more. Had a Brai in Surrey. (East Clandon if you know it- view of all of London- stunning)
Found slow puncture- no tube now. pumped up fully,
Left in the dark cycled my ass off to clandon train station shitting myself with several lights.
Got off at Wimbledon, Cycled to parents.

    The 30miler was around 2-2.5hrs of cycling (c. 12- 15 mph). the 10milers were pretty quick- 30-40mins (c. 15-20mph).
Ok so not fast at all, but I felt I was having a good workout on a spinny heavy Fixed MTB.
    Man I love that thing.
but now I need an innertube/ begin to carry patches.
    Stupid.

    The swim was 1k.

also just outside epsom was getting lost (pretty badly in the end) and overtook a set of roadies/ probably triathletes on a hill.
They were unimpressed and so hiked out to catch me. Made me laugh a little, as i was simply turning the pedals as i needed to for the hill.
    (more comfy cadence)

  • Cycled 200 metres down the road, cycled for 1 min on a turbo, cycled 200 metres back home. Distance specialist.

  • Usual route, 35 miles early this morning, significant improvement in my climbing and speed from last time though. Notable points were a f*cking annoying headwind in every direction, someone playing bagpipes standing in a layby on the B2024, and being insulted by a 80-year-old man on a rusty mtb.

  • 4 laps of RP and then 3 half laps doing TT efforts and sprinting back to the cafe in a monster (113"!) gear. Never really got on top of it before but it was turning noicely with slight tailwind. 65 miles all done before midday.

  • Ealing Skyride. 10k at about 10kph.

No one is as hardcore as me, except maybe RPM who was standing around for the duration of this fluoro swarm.

  • Also in RP. Did 5 or 6 laps (lost count). Resisted the temptation to try and keep up with the roadies on the flat, and just concentrated on the 'hills'. Seemed to work better.

  • Ealing Skyride. 10k at about 10kph.

No one is as hardcore as me, except maybe RPM who was working hard coaching for the duration of this fluoro swarm.

Yeah, up at 0545 this morning, just got home.

Seen enough yellow bibbage for a lifetime, except we will be at the Redbridge one and the main London one for more closed road madness.

  • Took the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal from Sheffield to Rotherham and then back home via the Ulley Resevoir and a hailstorm. The canal bit was great, I love riding towpaths. Should really have taken the SS to it though, clearly this is ideally suited, particularly as the only lock flight was a descent. Going to pick up the canal again later this year as it turns into the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Canal and head at least as far as Thorne.

  • its good to read about some town rides, hope the sun was out for all the westies there.
we went out in a 4 around the Purbeck hills, Tom 'Renshaw' 6PT danced up all the hills in big ring, all I can say is this boy patently rides more than the hipster spice route every day, good for an old dog like me to ride with you lads.
my master plan of shedding layers as the clouds cleared to a superb day worked perfectly and the swim at the end was a total joy.

  • Two goes on Swain's this evening, staving off the glum mood produced by yesterday's elementary gearing cock up (and anticipating a frank discussion with my wallet). I'd stopped being so bloody grim by the second zip down West Hill.

A tiny ride, but it made all the difference.

  • I had my first long ride ever today, from Victoria Park to Southend On Sea.
Until now I was mostly using my bike for transport, to commute.
The ride was 60 miles and it took me 3 hours, which sounds pretty good.
I was quite surprised to see only 1 other fixed wheel over hundreds of bikes...
    To be done again.

  • I rode to Brixton, got pissed, rode back home.
    Awesome.

  • What the hell happened to you guys? It seems like we all went different ways.

  • james was on fire, you were lost I was pissed.
    Simples.

Rode the whole way alone : (

  • 25 mile Great Inverurie Bike Ride for me yesterday, through some of the most gorgeous countryside North East Scotland has to offer. The route circumnavigates some notable local Pictish stone circles, and passes the highest point in Aberdeenshire, Oxen Craig and and the Iron Age hillfort of Mither Tap, part of the overall Bennachie area - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bennachie

This is the route - http://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/recreation/events/GIBRRoute.pdf

This is my tea and scone at a quick refuel stop!
