As far as I know, mineral oil does not degrade like dot fluid which has to be discarded if the bottle has been open for too long.
It is less harmful to environment.
You can use LHM oil from a car shop which is basically the same as the shimano/magura oil but much cheaper, or as some trials riders do, water! (bear in mind it will expand/freeze etc).
