  • HH in 2015?

I llike the idea of blue skies and the hills in the background. Little worried how much skin I would loose in a fall

  • Again, not UK, but...

    http://www.velodromodimontichiari.it/

A friend put me onto this the other day, not been finished long and apparently not getting much use. Its generally under £40 all in to fly to Bergamo or Brescia, I shall be spending an afternoon (weekend) there soon.

  • The airport Ryanair use for Verona is just outside Montichiari. There is one hotel there which isn't much cop, best to stay either in Verona (which is a cracking little city) or on the southern shore of Lake Garda, such as Desenzano.

Added: Ryanair now refer to it as Brescia, not Verona.

  • i treated myself to a session at Newport Velodrome for my birthday and it was the most fun i've had ever. The coach was totally awesome as he saw me watching eagerly and then came over and told me to get on the track and I was quite nervous and all 'errrrr I haven't had an induction' to which he replied 'go get a bike'. woo!

He then proceeded to order the 12 men on their swish track bikes up above the blue so that 'the lady' could ride around on the black for a bit (cringe) and despite the fact that I was totally bottling it up at the top corners- by the end of the sessiowe were whizzing around in a group which was a laugh. I'm sure I was pretty terrible at it but it was amazing fun!

If anyone is heading up newport way to go to the velodrome anytime soon....can i have a lift please? :D

  • Should also point out that 'Poole Park' hasn't been used competitively since 1996.

  • Wow amazing to see how Saffron lane track has just been abandoned. Last time I was there I was doing the motor-pacing. We we told at the time it would be used for for field hockey.
Basically it was the demographic change in the area that lead to its demise.
However the track was never a nice track to ride. The less steep tracks like Welwyn are more fun or short tracks like calshot.
There is a track in Trinidad I think that was as big as Welwyn but had the banking as steep as Saffron Lane and its impossible to ride up the banking unless you're going 40mph.

  • Has anyone been on the Reading track ?

  • Yeah - not for years though, others here will have been more recently. What do you want to know?

  • That's much better than the original

Velodrome and The Coldra repped in this one.

  • Added Tatem Park and Bournemouth to the list on 1st post.

  • Got a starter session next weekend at Calshot, your calling it the wall of death has filled me with confidence, thanks. Joking I cant wait, I've always ridden mountainbikes with flats and recently a bit of road so toeclips and fixed gear is going to be an experience. Cant wait though and will certainly be up at HH checking things out when I move to uni in London next month. How long does it take to ride there from Deptford/Greenwich area?

  • Not too long. Half an hour roughly.

It will shut at the end of October for Winter, so if you've got time come along at on Saturday at about 11.30 for the midday induction. Otherwise you'll have to hang on until March 2011!

  • Does anyone know what became of Gypsies Green?
    http://www.sportingsights.com/cycling/gypsies-green-velodrome-cycling/

There was talk, some years ago, about restoration. I can't find any info less than 2 or 3 years old.
First track I ever rode and last saw it about 6 years ago. It was in a very sorry state

  • I bet thats windy as fook.

  • Semi derelict, never particularly popular apparently..
likely to be demolished to make way for a hotel

  • I heard the hotel stuff about 3 years ago. Track was semi-derelict when I last saw it (2004/5?)
I remember it being used in the 70s, and yes, it was windier than fook

  • Can u just pop into Newport 7 days aweek?

  • Thanks, very usefull thread.

  • new velodrome being built in huyton. merseyside. new leisure centre called knowsley leisure and culture park. bmx track and an amazing skatepark, with outdoor concrete velodrome. should be ready v soon.

  • Goodnews and good luck with that if you're involved
    Just to keep thread complete

  • rode the Leicester one at saffron lane about 15 years ago before the current surface was put down, it used to have almost a step drop/ramp between the banking and the straight, was weird, and not very nice
