It was a study in casual, wasn't it? :-)
to be honest Chris is probably completely right, whereas I was just sort of making it up on the spot, based on sound evidence from Mel Brooks, Monty Python and the Carry On team.
I will say with regard to the romans, that I grew up in a part of the country that still isn't anywhere near as civilised or advanced as the Romans were 2000 years ago.
