  • I had to make a claim on M&S insurance recently, when my bike was driven over by a van at Highbury corner. As it wasn't an OTP, they asked me to write my own quote for replacement and then settled in full. Which was nice.

+1 to M&S being vg for bike insurance.

  • Do M&S cover you if you flatshare with non-family?

  • i was told that if you make a claim for the bike on the home insurance the premium will go really high for the next year that you have to pay the insurance, is that true?

  • ...my bike was insured on my home insurance through the Co-operative, and they were very helpful and paid out no problem (they wanted a crime ref no. and details of the bike/value).

However I understand (having failed to really take much notice) that this will be gradually recovered by any such insurance company through increasing premiums, and have been advised that separate policy for the bike is a better option.

Mind you isn't this how all insurance works - you claim once, then your policy goes up?

  • i was told the above too

    RPM?

  • I spoke to my insurer yesterday, told me I'd lose 10% of my No claims (which stands at 25% discount) so the policy will go up by maybe £50. Plus the £100 excess. I have to get a value from a bike shop so I am hoping to get that sorted in the next day or two. The only issue is that my home & contents only insures bikes up to the value of £500.

So.... £500 - £100 excess = a cheque for £400 hopefully in the next week or two

  • I've recently bought insurance from cycle guard and they were happy to put an endorsement on my policy to say that the Fahgettaboudit lock was approved.

  • Im about to get household insurance and would like to know of a list of possibilities (as it has to be agreed with the rest of the house)
Who has insurance that cover their bikes on the road?

  • I think M&S actually do quite a good deal last I heard...

  • I want NOW!!! Not what ive heard!!!

Grrr, spybot - i can read the posts above. Insurance changes and i want something more recent FFS...

  • Oh and i have read that if you dont have the reciepts for items they wont pay out...

    Is this true?

I have a second hand prototype but that means that i would never be able to find another for the price i paid for it. Anyway to insure it for an 'approx' value???

  • I have M&S. It's good IMO.

  • I just got contents insurance from Endsleigh for my many many belongings and got bike insured with it and they seem pretty good and you dont need to prove you have expensive locks they just want it locked to something immovable. I'll post on here if they actually pay out - but I have hope

  • +1 for M&S

I had a bike stolen last summer and they were very helpful. The bike had been upgraded quite significantly since it was first bought so they did the replacement as a custom build. Just asked me what I had before, got their 'approved agent' to quote for it at current retail value and basically gave me that as discount against a new custom build. The final payout was just over £1700. Much better than the £500 limit most household companies have.

Just spoke to Endsleigh and they won't cover the bike if it's a custom build as mine is, they referred me to a specialised bike insurer. So if you have added components to your bike I wouldn't rely on Endsleigh, or at least get it in writing that they cover you. And they do require specific, approved locks, you can see the list when you get a bicycle quote on their website.

My Endsleigh home contents does cover £150 for push bikes away from the home, which I did successfully claim for when my previous bike (worth around £400) got stolen. The excess comes out from the extra value generously enough so I got a cheque for £150.

  • i use post home contents, pay £12.50 a month, £50 excess and anything under £2000 you dont have to list seperately. Ive made a claim once and it got settled over the phone by a woman who sounded like the granny in the shreddies advert.

  • hi guys im quite new to the bike scene and just got myself a brand new single speed and it feels right to get it insured not only because of theft, even though ive sent out my anti theft kryptonite paperwork, but because of third parties.

now ive got a quote of about 60£ from ETA and another one of about 80£ from Cycleguard. Could you guys give me your advice on wich one to choose please. The diference seems to be the excess payed. any person good/bad experiences with any of them btw?

    cheers

  • Too good to be true? Anybody knows something about http://www.cc.totalcycleassist.co.uk/ ?

  • Seems bit too good to be true but according to their privacy policy page they are FSA registered:
"Mercia Place, 2 Main Street, Repton, Derbyshire, DE65 6EZ and is registered in England number 7184256" FSA registration No. 313806 - so I'm guessing if they are genuinely registered they have to fulfil any promises. As always.. check the small print..

I wrote about bicycle insurance a little while back and concluded ETA do the best service.

Doesn't cover theft - hence being so cheap

  • Eta have changed there tune if your article is accurate- when I spoke to them they ghastly a vicious depreciation clause.

Iain, bear in mind that you can only use a sharers policy- and in the UK that means Endsleigh for home contents.

  • Had 3 bikes taken from the shed, Fondriest track bike, 10 year old Gary Fisher full suspension bike and a basic GT mountain bike. The insurance company has said they will replace like for like but I'm a bit unclear exactly what this means.
The chances of them tracking down a replacement Fondriest seems slim and i got it as a bargain from ebay [£200 fully built] so are they likely to fob me off?
Similarly the Gary Fisher was only insured for £500 as it was old but cost a grand new, obviously they're not going to give me a grand cash but a £500 full sus wouldn't be much use to me.
Ideally I'd just like the cash to hit ebay and start again but I'm concerned if I take this option they will discount the payment and I'll not end up with enough to get sorted out. They stress in the policy they will only pay out what they can replace the stuff for.

anyone got any experience on this?

  • You're fucked.

They'll give you £50 in Halfords vouchers.
