• Another anectodal cautionary tale offered up on the benefits of wearing a helmet...

I was cycling down to Shoreham yesterday to join family and friends for a weekend by the sea. Going down the hill in Kingswood when a car made a turn into me. No time to brake - went over the bonnet, shattered his windscreen and flipped over the roof of the car. Ambulanced to A&E and told I was extremely lucky to walk away from it with only cuts and bruises. The bike's mashed, various bits of me are more red and blue than they were previously, but the helmet saved my head.

I only started wearing a helmet a year ago when I saw one of the more extreme "mashed face, but my helmet saved me" threads on this or another forum. Still not sure I'd wear one in town, but when I'm doing any sort of distance riding on open roads, you can bet I'll be wearing a lid.

I guess you can be the safest cyclist on the road, but you can't account for the other fools. Cycle safe people...
