As a kind of related update to my question, I saw a ped get hit by a car on Saturday (or rather, a ped was stupidly running across the road and got clipped hard by a car he hadn't seen in the second lane (4 lanes!). I was about 40 feet away at the time, with a doubledecker bus in front of me and to the left. The police turned up, but didn't want statements from either the bus driver or me because they were sure that the cctv from the bus would have caught the accident, and would be sufficient for the report. Which I guess goes to prove that the field of vision for those external cameras must be quite good atleast, it's just that us plebs don't have a straightforward way of getting hold of it.
