I find this very hard to believe. For starters they probably gave up drinking for health benefits, ie. they were concerned for their health. This would naturally have them looking at improving other aspects of their diet/lifestyle.
Also, it's not just alcohol calories that are adding weight. It's the fact that booze increases your appetite AND the fact you are less likely to consider healthy food options when pissed.. that kebab looks great!
Cutting out booze might be a nice start but it's not the be all and end all.
