I struggle like mad to increase my pace though. So I may not be the best person to advise.
For beginners I'd advise just trying to run for longer (time, not distance) for the first few months. Doing this conditions the body to running and will bring about improvements in speed naturally.
I've heard far too many accounts of newbie runners starting speed work in the first 12 months then ending up with a chronic injury.
