Definitely leave the forks chrome. They look really good as they are. Try and find a gear that is as close to the tension you want, then use a tensioner if needs be. It's not a problem when it's singlespeed, just doesn't look quite as nice.
*There might be enough dropout to file in a bit of horizontal to get the tension, if you don't mind hacking at the frame a little.
