Even today you see square taper BB+crankset set-ups that have kept going for decades. Certianly not flimsy then. But in general, modern drivechain components have become lighter as well as stiffer. But not necessarily more resiliant IMHO. Not wanting to show my age. But most products today are not designed to last, as we are aware of their ever decreasing shelf life.
