I can stop OK with my front brake alone. I doubt I could do much with the rear (no rear caliper), without being fixed to my peals though.
I have twistwed out of a pedal by accident while spinning down a very long hill at well over 50 Kph. It was a steep mountain road with a big drop off one side. I was wearing my commuter shoes with eggbeater cleats, and have quattro pedals on the fixed. Perfectly compatible, just not an ideal combo for fixed riding.
Bloody scary.
