  • if you are male or female you are qualified.

  • I support ladies sub-sections

  • Can I just butt in and claim #internetfame

London to Southend, about 60 miles of rolling quiet roads from East London to the seaside town with the longest pier in Europe

Southend has the longest pleasure peir in the world, fact...there's also fuck all to do on it, fact.

  • i support ladies sub-sections

    lolz!

  • I think gender is not the issue at the heart of this, it's about what type of forum people want.........
...... You've been missing out on good times.

    PJ's - Good post!
I suspect there's many, many males as well as females who avoid forum rides because they have no idea of their ability or otherwise to keep up with the pace. I bought my first bike in 30+ years recently and have since joined a local club and progressed up to the fast Sunday ride with them but was originally scared shitless of being left for dead on my first outing. It's all about getting out there in the first place.

Perhaps all rides should in future include a guidline pace / ability sub heading? Oh, and a few definite beginner rides with male and female leaders?

Can't we just highlight all the womens threads in pink?

^Comedy gold and seems to have slipped under the radar - repped!

  • is the womens sub-forum like the church of sub-genius?

  • I really can't be a$%^ to read the debate. Too much blablabla, let's just have sub-forum if VB lets us and see what happens.

    ^This!!!

  • i want an OAPs forum , only suitable for me and Clive!

    you, Clive and me!

  • I'm not London based so I don't lurk around here that often but women's rides or issues do grab my attention.

Unlike DFGSS, LFGSS is huge and lucky enough to have sufficient numbers of women on the forum for it to be viable to give a women's subforum a shot.

As the suggested subforum does not seek to be exclusive to women but rather to focus on issues relevant and important to women (that some men might find boring, trivial, pointless, irrelevant etc) I've come a whole 180degrees from initially thinking it counter-productive to believe it has the potential to achieve great things for women and for the forum.

I would love to see threads moved or linked into the subforum such as the one on choice of women's saddles etc. It could be a great resource and reference for women in cycling, and getting women into cycling and upping their level of knowledge, ability and enjoyment not to mention the obvious social aspect and the benefits of the dynamic of women working together.

Any men that don't like it can ignore whilst women will still post elsewhere on the forum.

  • you, Clive and me!

Jenny, you are but a callow youth.

  • There we have it. Let's set up a women's sub-form as a gateway drug.

    Exactly!

I became aware of the forum after Nhatt told me about the women's only track training last year...I've now faced the fear and have joined a women's ride, braved South beers, and now even dare show my face on some of the mixed rides too...

No WAY would I have just dived in here and got stuck in straight away

On balance, I think I'm for women's rides/threads (where all can read and post) although probably not a whole sub-forum.

  • Jenny, you are but a callow youth.

Clive, darling, that's the nicest thing anyone's said to me all week.

    Mwah, mwah.

  • hope you don't mind me posting here, i'm pretty new to the forum, but it's been really good to me and everyone's been really helpful - would be great to have a bit of a section to search for women's rides/threads as i've searched this before and it doesn't pop up all that easily.

    this is all :)

  • And I've just looked at the Thursday Two Hours of Power thread and been reminded that there were 2 pages of talk about whether maxi dresses were this season or not.

Funny old place this forum, full of funny old folk, and I mean that in the nicest possible way!

  • i agree with corny's comment - but maybe it can be managed. and i like hanging out with too many guys on the forum to leave the rest of it forever.

probably will be helped if this move isn't seen as a license for some people to fill the other parts of the forum with offensiveness, 'as long as they don't post it in the girls' bit'.

  • The most segregating thing is when indispensible members of this forum take it upon themselves to pack their bikes and swan off around the world for an elongated period.

    hear hear (xx)

You mean there hasn't been enough offensiveness?

resolves to try much, much harder

Seriously, I think this is a great idea... I'm gonna nudge Lori to check it out, she wants to ride more but needs more confidence on the roads and I'm a 'completely crap cycling instructor'... I'm paraphrasing her words, but you get the gist... ;]

  • I'm a 'very good walking instructor'... I'm paraphrasing her words, but you get the gist... ;]

    Ftfy.

  • Oh, Ashe... You are awful*...

    • I'm being nice...

huh? did i over-double my negatives? head hurts

  • Meh... Who cares? Mebbe see you later...

  • I can't stand male only company. Its unnatural in the world, unless living aboard an Attack Class nuclear submarine.

Embarrassingly, it seems to be just the UK and US military who won't let women serve on these vessels.

The British rationale: "medical concerns for the safety of the foetus and hence its mother".

    Fuck me.

  • Women only forum can lead to direct attacks by the sex pests via PM. Just saying....

If that happens, the PM's can be reported to a moderator, and the offender should have their username, IP, and email address permanently banned.

  • Back briefly to comment on this, even though gender-related threads bring me out in hives.

Yes, I think there should be a women's sub-forum. Because it's nice to be in a majority for once (men often find this difficult to understand - I guess the best analogy would be to point out that in the real world, cyclists are usually a minority). It'd be nice to join in with conversations without everyone either assuming you're a man, or knowing you're a woman and making other assumptions based on that. And without any contribution you make being read as a woman's opinion, rather than just a person's opinion. Although it shouldn't be the case, in some single-sex environments, gender ceases to be so much of an issue. (This is a regular argument for segregated schools, where apparently girls do much better at traditionally 'male' subjects, etc.)

And I'd like there to be more women's events - simply because I spend my working life surrounded by men, and although I enjoy it 90% of the time, a change is as good as a rest. Again, it would be reassuring and refreshing to turn up for a ride knowing you wouldn't be part of a very conspicuous minority.

It's not all about nice easily-paced rides and asking stupid questions. I'm not slow or stupid. I'd like to meet more girls I can race up hills and talk bike-geek with. At the same time, it would potentially be a much better environment for newbies. Four years ago I barely knew one end of a bike from another, and if it weren't for some very inspiring and supportive women, I'd probably still be commuting on a £99 hybrid from the Argos catalogue.

And yes, it would be nice to have somewhere to discuss period pains, and the whole shaving/waxing/depilating issue, without people going 'eeeeewwwww!', or making stupid jokes.

And yes, to be very clear about this, I left this forum because of the sexism. (Though I've got a lot out of it in the past, including lots of very good friends, and I'm grateful for that.)
