  • Wheels that take impacts in directions that they are not intended to be strong - especially carbon fibre ones - fail.

    Haussler weighs around 70kg, let's say his bike is another 7kg - travelling at 60kph? That's a pretty heavy impact for any wheel to take laterally. It looks like the carbon just cracked - at least ensuring that some of the energy from the collision went into that. I won't stop riding carbon rims because of it :-)
