I just started putting bits on a Champion Mondial frame I picked up, along with a sweet matching wheel set with campy record hubs and arc en ciel rims. Trying to keep it vintage, single speed and not too shiney as I'm moving to London at the end of summer and I don't want my Dutch souvenir nicked.
Any tips on stopping surface rust (localised clear coat perhaps?) would be great. Kaas or Zieleman, maybe you know where I can find cream touch up paint, I'm in s'Hertogenbosch.
Do you gents know what year it's from, if it's an A or B( SN: 3202809 Roto cast bb shell)?
Also any general tips on ss, it's my first, not counting the frankenbeater I ride every day.
PS, does anyone know what these Miche cranks are (170)? Nothing on VeloBase
Cheers,
David
The server doesn't like me, so here are some links pics of the Miche cranks etc.

I live in between Amsterdam and Dieren. Can join and perhaps guide around a bit.
But... don't have a Gazelle...
Maybe I have to buy one for < EUR 100.- just for the event or have to borrow one that I gave away 10 years ago.If you want to visit the company (Friday or Monday e.g.) contact the company in advance. I know some people there, so that might help (or not..).
Don't expect to see much though. It'll be more to enjoy the trip, the time and each other.Anyone in for a visit to the velodrome in nearby Apeldoorn (Worlds 2011 venue) ?
They have Gazelle track bikes (aluminium) to rent. -

David, that's a very nice AA frame!
Frame number looks like 1977 make.
Superb colours (previous Gazelle team colours, or Soka Snacks as it was before) with very nice matching wheels.
You may be able to find original Gazelle touch up paint, but I have the experience that it doesn't match well. Colour codes are Ivory 81 (on white primer) with baikal blue 68 panels.
Perhaps go to a car tuning shop and find a nicely matching colour.
Try spot repair with sanding, priming, colour paint and clear coat. -

Thanks Cheese, I was hoping for good news, I love marktplaats, I'm really going to miss it. Fietsenmaker tomorrow to tighten the bb, then off to the car paint shop around the corner. Should be riding by 12:00!

And don't forget to flip the front brake blocks.
Now it's dangerous: open to the front. -

My friend is in conversation with the guy and says that the seller wants 230 euro posted which gets:
the frame, campag headset, setapost and BB and a 3T stem and dropbars. I was thinking that seemed a little dear, i would've thought a competetive price to be more around the 175mark?any info/guidance you guys have would be greatly recieved.
150 should be ok ...nice color though

Now it's dangerous: open to the front.Do you mean there is more pad beyond the front of the calliper than behind, or that the angle of the pads means the back of them will contact the rim first? Or something completely different.

if you look at the brake block you should see one end where you can get the actual rubber block out of the metal " shoe " the other side will be fully built up
the way you have the brake block on means when you brake hard the rubber block could pop out of the metal shoe
turn the
through 180 degrees so it is impossible for the rubber block to come out forwards -

The blocks are open on both ends. I did borrow the brake from another of my bikes though, a pair of Shimano Arabesques are on the way.

Yesterday i bought this "Gazelle". To me it's clearly not a Gazelle. Do you guys have any idea what kind of bike it is? It has a "W" stamped on the seatstays and also on the forkcrown. The BB only says 4 86, there are no other numbers or anything.
The dropouts (and probabely tubing) are Columbus but the lugwork look a bit like the old Champion Mondials (Bocama?). The rear brakebridge makes me think of a Concorde. It also looks like the bike is fully chromed under the paint. -

Oooohhh, could be anything. Perhaps produced in April 1986.
Waleigh
Wazelle
Watavus
Woga
Woncorde
Wuperia
Wuerciotti
Wolnago
Wianchi
Wios
Wogliaghi
Winelli
Weddy Merckx
WagasawaBut the W logo's don't look too good. I don't expect it to be a big or high end brand.

Not likely, but I would recommend an accurate refinishing anyway. Thuss wetpaint in authentic Gazelle colour and the right decals. Of course it is a quite an investment, but with a 753r it is easy to justify. A powder coat will pretty much ruin merits and resale value however. Such you could consider with a beat up A, but not with a 753r imo. Moreover a wetpaint would be easier to get rid of the next time you would consider a refinishing.
Is wetpaint a synonym for stone enamel?
I might be able to get this done after all. -

:-)
I saw it yesterday, it certainly looks like a well made frame, so maybe it's not from a big brand, but certainly made by a high(er) end frame builder. Good luck (re)searching it Shame!
By the way, on the subject of Gazelle repaints, I got an e-mail from the factory that Gazelle no longer does repaints themselves but BCP Special Paintwork now does this for them. They have the right decals as well. I will be sending a frame there for a friend, will let this thread know how things turn out. It's one in the same beautiful colour combo as dbr's...

the balckx from mathieu was painted there and my old grey Gazelle track was also painted there, he does a really good job, will set you back quite a few Euro's tho, cheaper to buy a nos gazelle frame

I might be able to get this done after all. With such a rare and delicate frame it's better to get someone who knows what they're doing to repaint it. I recommend Argos Racing Cycles of Bristol (search back a few pages and you'll see a Gazelle frame they did of mine) it won't be cheap (think of it as an investment with such a frame, my Gazelle was given to me by a friend who used to despatch, with Concorde transfers on it and a shitty beige not original paint job) but it will be done very well and will last a very, very, long time.
Their colours are in oven baked enamel. They also pick up and deliver by courier (£30 to you and back if I remember correctly) from and to anywhere in the country. Their turnaround time is about 4 weeks.

i guess this is my new project then...£75 didn't seem too shabby and i think i'll prefer it to my geared mottam i have at the moment. Quite happy with that!
Yes.
Although I am not moving it on! Not after that find - it was a rare frame at a bargain price.
I think I may have to take it down to london at some point and get it done.
