  • Im after a light weight bottom bracket for my raleigh leton sport 52

Its a fairly heavy frame so i really want to keep everything as light as posible, iv checked out the "list of list" (bible) "The Definative List"

Any suggestions, iv got a Golden Arrow Crank (52) that id like to keep/use if possible, i also have the original single speed crank.

Planning to get a flip/flop hub so can switch between the two.

ppls thoughts/knowledge would be usefull, im pretty new to this game so simple explainations would be usefull

  • Eat less pies?

On a serious note, I doubt that you would notice the difference in weight.
WeightWeenies shows a range of 300g, from 57g to 379g, and bearing in mind a full 500ml water bottle weights 500g, the difference is minor

  • I have Tune AC38 for sale (titanium / square taper) - pretty much brand new.

    EDIT . . actually the spindle length might not be cool for fixed/SS . . . . ?

  • if you really want to build a lightweight bicycle, start with buying a decent frame.

I think this is a common mistake in the whole weightweenie thing, someone looks at the difference between - for example - crank A and crank B and sees only a 100g difference and concludes it makes zero difference as you can leave your keys at home or take a crap before you leave and save as much weight.

But the point is that when the same level of weight pednadry is applied to the whole bike you end up riding a 13lb bike rather than a 25lb bike.

I would think its never going to be 13lb? Just my 2c

My point is that when applied to the whole bike, reducing 100g here and 200g here soon adds up to a lightweight bike.

Chrisshaw2104 has not stated a goal of 13lbs for his bike.

  • yea, agreed tynan, and agreed branwen.

Althougth it wont make a huge difference on its own i think overall its gotta help.

I also take note about the frame, but it is reynolds 351 so its not a FATTY ! and i did like the comment about the pie's.

Ok so what BB's do people recomend then?

Can i ue the same bb for both my fixed wheel and gear setup ?

  • I also need a nice headset and there isnt a definative list to start pouring over, any advic would be appreciated ?

  • forget about the BB, just get a decent one that fit your crank.

if you really want to save a few weight, just go to the bathroom, lift the toliet seat, squat and do a shit.

  • So glad i found this forum - Its the in depth knowledge that i love !

There is a lot to swap between fixed and gears. I would think you could run A single front cog, or else on the inside ring of a road double for fixed, but I think it could get complicated.

    And the bitchiness ;)

  • ok well thinkill go gears as i have a full group set of golden arrow. only problem is the rear derailers fixing bolt is to big for my frame openin.

Has anyone drilled their frame to allow for this, or is it ust worth getting another derailer?

Yea mainly the bitchiness though, its like i live in a world of constant sarcasm

  • I'd think to really save weight on a build, first concentrate on the wheels, then the other components?

The bb would be a fair way down such a list. Or have I missed something?

    Serious question:

What have you upgraded so far, to make for the lighter bike you're hoping for?

  • I'd think to really save weight on a build, first concentrate on the wheels, then the other components?

Also wheels have the most impact on how a bike handles, so good wheels will make it nice(r) to ride :)

  • no you havent missed anything

Thinking of these wheels, what u guys think, probably in black though, dont knw about th weight though.

  • i knw its bad but i just liked the asthetics of them :-( (noob)

  • haha just picked the same wheelset - think im gnna go for the on one -

nice lightweight, and in my price range

  • With bottom brackets the diameter of the one i have installed now is around 44mm ? but sheldon brown only gives shell widths @ 68mm am i missing somthing here

Did my measurement with tape and Pi?

  • 68 is length not width...

  • Diameter should be the same, all are likely the same on modern bikes (not bmx)....
