I think it depends on your circumstances, definitely in your case gears=better, but if you're based in London (which MinDinh is) then SS/fixed is a good solution for getting around town.
I've got a geared beauty for long rides though :-) -

Well he bought it. Getting it made up by cycle surgery in Kings Cross and picking it up today :)
He looked at the Fuji Classic aswell, and read some stuff on here comparing it to the langster and decided that this was for him.
It's also his B day and he treated himself lol.

only posting as i apparently need to make 3 posts to start my own thread but now im here i may as well comment! I converted a track bike to road use for winter training but i live in south wales & just found it too restrictive. There's a great out & back flat route nearby, up to 40 miles but it's either block headwind in one direction or the other & in the winter i just found myself under-geared with the tailwind & overgeared with the headwind. Also tried using it to ride to 4 miles work once but got there bathed in sweat! On my usual commuter (mtb with slicks) able to take take it easy enough not to get worked up on the way to work so went straight back to that.
Have used it so little i'm going to post details on here.
Conlusion, gears & freewheel are erm . . . The past, present & future! ; - /

@ MinhDinh, So your boss bought the Langster? Good choice imo. Very light and strong mass production fixed gear bike...and very fast too :)

@ OP I'm going to stick this in the stolen bikes thread too but I have just seen a smallish felt, geared road bike for sale outside a second hand shop just at the end of Green Lanes where it joins Newington Green. I had no phone to take picture and was too much of a rush with the kids to ask about it but it might be worth telling your boss to go and have a look to see if its his.

Thank you Ade. Would a theif sell it so close to where it was stolen? :o
That's only 1 mile away. I did make a post on it in the stolen thread. Yes it is a grey bike with red tape on some bits. 54 cm bike.
Yep bruced he's going to pick it up now.
I told my boss to go to that area and see if that is his Felt. What can he actually do if it is his?

glad you saw this, yeah I think they'd off load it anywhere, they don't care if the guy in the shop gets caught I guess.
As for what he can do, I guess if he has some proof he can take the police with him, he'll know it straight away if its his, its still got a clock on and a bottle carrier I think and 54 sounds spot on. Hope it works out.

Yeah that sounds like it man.
Chinese speedo clock. Water bottle thing. Small world. I'm trying to get someone to go there. I work in Well St so can;t go and he is on his way to Kings Cross for his new bike.
I'm calling his brother to go and check it out. Thanks again Ade

cool, i'm free and no more than ten minutes away my number is zero7five28 seven197nine6 if your brother needs assistance get him to give me a bell however I would suggest taking the police if it definately his as the guy will have paid for it and won't want to give it back for nothing.

Great work, Ade. Hope it results in a recovery.

Oh man his brother is in wood green with his wife and kids.
I guess we'll check it out if they are open tomorrow. My boss is an opitcian so has to do a test in 40 mins so hopefully he can get time back from Kings Cross perhaps. Sucks that no one can get to it, but I doubt it will be gone by tomorrow.
Thanks for the offer Ade, very kind of you.

So my boss got back and said he didn't see it outside tesco!
I was like doh! It was at the secondhand shop near it.
He was chuffed over the Specialiszed Langster though. I had a go on my first fixie and it was very nice. A lot better than the Felt and smooth. Loved it!

I have many pictures and am almost certain it is his bike. Only thing is there is not red tape. They must have put some new tape on. Some kids must have stolen it and sold it to that shop for a cheap price. They offered it to me for £250 I declined and they said they'd do it for cheaper. They offered a test ride and I was contemplating taking it for you but I couldn't be sure it was actually your bosses. It has a carbon fibre bottle cage, that's quite a distinguishing feature.

I'll say it again, Jenjen cares.
Come to think of it, where is Jenjen? Maybe they don't care after all.I'm still around reading up on information about various bikes and components on this forum.
To the guys who helped with your advice thank you very much. To a lot of the other guys with unhelpful and ignorant comments I think you guys are total twats. Obviously I am new to single speed and fixed gear bikes, hence the many questions in what different components are.. which OTP bike is better etc..
Me, my brother and another friend have been interested in buying a fixie. Although we all ride bikes to work we are obviously not that knowledgable about bikes in general, especially fixies.
Some of the advice given has been very sound. Thanks again. After your input we have been going to different lbs's to test different bikes and are able to ask the right questions.
Some of the other comments are dam right rude, ignorant and just no help to anyone what so ever. Not very welcoming for someone totally new to riding fixed gear.

I think we've found a new strapline for the home page!

Yes, but that post broke the internet.

just picked up a Langster the other week and it rides so well, bitch on the hills but then i am a fan of pie, so it'll help me out in that way, haven't had the balls to go fixed on it yet but coming from a SS mountainbike background its only a matter of time before i do it (probably after a beer or two) and injure myself in the process (almost ceratinly),

Any news on the Felt? Was it his, did he get it back?
