Is the black one a lab? I think it's more that labs get fat, rather than the nut removal. I had my pit/staffy x done when he was about 8 and didn't change his diet or exercise, and he didn't put on any weight. It didn't make much difference to his temperament either, tbh. He did live to 16 though.
