they suit the hipster equipment ethos though. using old out of date technology, slow, clunky, incongruous, retro looking, and acceptable to your peers.

However when it come to bicycle like the randonneur variety , it's extremely useful to be able to carry a front bag without getting obstructed by the brake levers when changing gear, as well as being able to trim your gear if they're not exactly where they should be.
Of course there's the option of bar end shifter instead of downtube/toptube, but they're down to preference more than performance.
