  • Anyway, if you'd report it, could they give you shit for not running brakes?

isn't a fixed rear wheel constituted by english law as a rear brake in itself?

  • but don't you need two?

  • put a front brake on then report it. Job done. Although given that you recovered the bike immediately after the theft it's unlikely the police would be particularly interested in looking at it, they'd just need a statement from you.

  • Its not an issue that the bike was brakeless. unicycles dont have brakes...

  • unicycles cant go at 25Mph

  • Thats a challenge if ever I heard one.

surely the mental pic is good enough

good point, nothing could beat my mental image of event. I am enjoying the draw your own collisions thread though.

  • *the event

Not sure how fast he can go:

    c'mon obi! think about it

  • or he was just a kid who wanted a bike and is now seriously hurt.

If he wanted a bike he can get a job, save up some money and buy one like the rest of us do.

Fuck him, the thieving little shit.

  • Missed this completely a few days ago. +1 to wmialil showing compassion. Once someone crashes like that, the normal rules of the thieving game stop applying and the first priority is to save a life. I'm glad he made it--that sounds as if it was touch and go. (NO pun intended!)

Contrary to popular perception, compassion can be a powerful tonic to overcome vindictiveness and 'eye-for-an-eye' mentality.

Why not visit him in hospital? You could make a friend.

I have no view on whether to involve the police or not. On the one hand, I think every theft should be reported, but owing to what happened this seems unnecessary here. This boy doesn't exactly sound like a career criminal. Who knows? This may well be the last bike he's attempted to steal.

  • Not always.

I wish Robert Mugabe was dead.
I would never steal a bike.

An extreme example but you get my drift.

I don't wish Robert Mugabe was dead. I wish he had no power and had been convicted of his crimes to spend the rest of his life in jail. There's no need to wish him death when much better options are available.

  • What does "today's society" mean? Serious question.

    The Big Society, obviously.

  • Why not visit him in hospital? You could make a friend.
    .

LOL I have no idea if you really mean half of the stuff you post or if you just post up shit to wind people up like I do when I am bored or angry.
    But this is pure genius

  • The Big Society, obviously.

In which case, it makes sense.

  • Why?! Reconciliation between offenders and 'victims' seems to make the victims of crime happier with the resolution and closure of the case and the mental stress being robbed / mugged causes and decreases recidivism amongst offenders.

Oliver may be a punning fool, but speaks the truth (sometimes, just don't get him on to philosophy).

  • I am glad you got your bike back William and even gladder that you are able to show such compassion in the circumstances. Well done mate, you are an example to us all.

    +1, just seen this.

Yep, it's usually pretty obvious when Oliver's fucking with you

  • Oliver may be a punning fool, but speaks the truth (sometimes, just don't get him on to philosophy).

Oi! I'm not a punning fool, and I don't speak the truth ... er ... hang on ...

  • Why not visit him in hospital? You could make a friend.

  • Its not an issue that the bike was brakeless. unicycles dont have brakes...

As long as the unicycle is direct drive it doesn't need a brake.

The law requires either 2 mechanical brakes (Inc fixed drivetrain) or direct drive.

Anyway, veevee the reAson you statement was false is that you were comparing wishing something with doing it... Wishing someone ill is worse than wishing someones bike was stolen and actually doing someone harm is worse than stealing thier bike, but wishing harm isn't worse than actually stealing.

Generally wishing harm on someone does more harm to your own psyce than anything else though.

Oliver is indeed a good moral person... I would consider visiting the thief in hospital, but only so I could accidentally slap him on the back too hard and watch him wince :)

Do you always have to do this? Thinking for yourself, not joining in? Is this what gets you off? Being your own man, having some common decency? Can't you just be angry? Is it that hard, just for once, not to give a subject any thought at all?
People like you should be locked up.

  • LOL I have no idea if you really mean half of the stuff you post or if you just post up shit to wind people up like I do when I am bored or angry.

Are you bored or angry often, Mike?

  • Only when he's awake, I would say.
    BTW Happy Birthday Sharky

  • I'm glad the OP got his bike back (again), and showed the compassion you'd expect from a decent human being.

I also hope the opportunist thief makes a full recovery, feels some remorse (which is not unlikely, as painful repercussions – at your own hand – have a way of tempering one's behaviour), and also ends up in a situation where he can acquire a bicycle by lawful means, and enjoy riding it.

It's not that ridiculous to think that people at odds with each other might become friends one day. I was on the first forum ride to Brighton, and vividly remember Object ranting about how this 50/14 bloke who'd turned up on an inappropriate bike that he couldn't control - causing injuries and bike damage to others as well as himself thanks to a reckless and irresponsible attitude - was a complete cunt. Object hoped 50/14 (who'd been carted off in an ambulance) was going to recover from his own injuries, but initially wanted nothing further to do with the bloke. He was spitting feathers for weeks. Absolutely no love lost.

Most people know the rest: they became great friends, and Object spent many hours offering 50/14 comfort and support on his deathbed a few years later.
