  • **Now that I have joined the ranks of undead office workers I plan on making the most of my weekends. Though they are short, it's entirely possible to get far away from the city, inexpensively, for some fresh air and to see more of our awesome countryside.

*With no particular dates in mind, I propose a series of overnight camping trips of no particular format, duration or length.***

In my daydreams I have so far considered:

    • Getting a train to Norfolk (for instance) on a Saturday morning, cycling all day, draining a bar, making a fire, sleeping and wending slowly back home the next morning with a stop for a decent lunch.
    • Cycling as far up the Thames, heading West, as it is possible to do in two days.
    • a seaside mini-tour from Broadstairs to Brighton.

    etc.

Importantly, I don't think these should be big, organised excursions involving lists and months of planning (though these can be great too). Instead, I see them as being a bit more spontaneous, depending on who wants to come and where we feel like going. Oh, and probably not competitive or overly arduous.

Rivendell, who I gather are an American maker of bikes and frames, call these 'S24O' (sub-24 hour overnight) trips. They have two sort-of interesting articles relating to it on their website: Camping vs. Touring and A kit for one night out. The former outlines roughly the idea, the latter the amount of kit they reckon you'd need to do it. Not that it has to be done how they suggest of course.

I'd be really interested in seeing who's up for it in principle.

    Any thoughts?

  • Anyone free this weekend?

  • Not this weekend, no. But I am keen. Two of my favourite things. Bikes and Tents. OK, 3. Bikes, Tents and Beer.

  • Yay, me too! And cake.

  • I'm so keen.
Just put a rack on the Geek2.
but not sure about the weekend, will let you know asap.

    Ti-arrosporks ftw.

  • I have a ti spoon sans prongs :-(

  • Camper fail^

It's all about the Ti arroSpork. You were missed on the Lewes trip Josh, you'd have loved it.

  • This is unlikely for me outside of school holiday times, since weekends are like golddust for us parents of school age kids. But I will do my best to turn up at one in August, should it happen ...

  • You were missed on the Lewes trip Josh, you'd have loved it.

I'm sure I would have! I was well cheesed off about not making it. I had other plans though unfortunately.

  • sounds like a nice idea

  • Interested, once I get the surly sorted

I have a ti arrospork and one of these which can easily be strapped to one side of a rack.

Also thinking of buying one of these

  • There is a cool campsite on a small island on thames somewhere (I forget exactly), you can only use it if you arrive under your own steam.

  • I'd definitely be up for this once the sun comes out to play

  • I'd love to join too, not this weekend though...

  • This sounds like a great idea! I'd be up for some camping, but busy this weekend :(

  • Me and super are in Henley drinking some pimms. Camping overnight at Wallingford and then to oxford in the am.
    Super awesome.

  • Made it to wallingford, pitched tents, in pub. Best day of riding for a while.

  • Wallingford is very nearly my local town.

    Which pub are you in?

I'm so very jealous of you guys - in the library revising atm :-(

Beautiful evening for it, try taking the bikes to this pub, it's lovely and in a tiny village 5 miles from where you are.
