I know what you're saying but we've never tipped for bar staff (likewise most of the world outside N.America). So just because ppl do in other countries then I don't think we should. I don't see there's a need, ppl don't have to work in bars and if we tip there then why not other places? (shops, dry cleaners etc...).
I work in the workshop of a bike shop and I've had tips a few times. Its amazing when it happens but I don't feel bad if someone doesn't and I'd hate it if it became the norm - of course I'd like the money but I'd hate it if we adopted the American tipping culture. I find it quite absurd really.
But you are quite right it could be a culture shock to her if she's used to ppl doing it in Canada.
