big no, even expose crank spiders are evil. Also, exposed outer rings are outlawed in the new NA Rule set. Not that we follow those rules, but we may oneday.
And the difference between the two gears in really minimal. I run a 4t difference on my cassette hub, and it's just enough to be worth while.
