Just got my Surly Karate Monkey-frame today :) Looks nice.
I'm hoping to build it up this weekend.
But, would it be required to get the BB-shell faced? I'm going to move a set of LX-cranks with external bearings from my old bike..
I'm kind of thinking that the bearings are not that expensive, so I might as well try and see if it works without facing, and then get it faced if the bearings get fucked.. But if it's for sure required then it would be stupid not to get it faced..
How about riding carbon seatposts? I have an FSA-one that is rated for MTB-use, but I do weigh in at 220lbs so I don't really know.. :)
i've not had a carbon post snap on me since the early 90's think the vast majority are find for most types of mtb, wouldn't recommend it for downhill!
as far as the facing goes it's all about the tolerences of external bbs, you don't HAVE to face them but they wont line up perfectly which will cause your bearings to wear quicker, and it can be a lot quicker depending on how wonky your alignment is
