• I have a broken heart, Hippy broke it, I'm the one that has to deal with the pain.

• I got done in a similar fashion, undertaking stationary traffic when a car decided to pull out and into a petrol station without indicating.

Thankfully I was only doing about 11/12mph so no breakages (except bike) and he admitted fault so it's all gravy.

• yeah, that's one i've been pulled as well, but the driver missed me by a few inches.

i dont know where Tea_bee lives, but apart from the crossing on the way to deptford, i also have to look out at this point as the road gets narrower (end of bus lane/bus stop) and there's the station right after to it, so you never know if drivers are simply coming to the outer lane or if they will drop into the station. i was nearly snapped there, luckly it was all jammed and the car didnt manage to pull out of the line in time to hit me.

• btw, i now scream 'oi' at distracted crossing pedestrians. i do it so loud that i can feel my chest vibrating. most times it sounds like an angry pitbull bark, but it works just fine.

I do the same - especially when you get the ped who just suddenly steps in the road and then decides to look. If you shout REALLY loudly, it freezes them in their tracks before they put their foot under your front wheel. Then as I whistle past their nose, I say "Soooorrryyyyyyyy..." on the way by.

BTW I just want to say, peds on mobile phones are a fucking menace.

And I don't think anyone else has said it yet, but I hope the rider is ok.

LOL I live at the top of the hill to the right of that picture, so I've usually either gone up through the park, or turned right into the side street just back up the road a bit, because sitting for 30 seconds in the middle of the road there waiting to turn right up Maze Hill isn't my idea of fun. But even then, I'm on the right of the road, so I won't be getting cut across by cars. The only time I'm not is if I plan to stop into the posh wine shop on the left just after the garage. Which is pretty rarely.

I'd never thought how dodgy that spot could be for cyclists heading straight on. Thanks for the warning.

• dude, i swear i looked at her arm and it looked fairly ok (i can say i'm experienced with broken bones as i have some 10 fractures in my body from skateboarding). then i notice the elbow a bit disjointed, and i could see the white of the bone showing up thru the ripped clothes. dont get me wrong, this was a 3 secs inspection :)
if i'm right, from there you can possibly count with one surgery and some 3 months of recovery. but as i said, it could've been much worse.

• Came past there at about 8.40, one ambulance, one ambulance car, a police car and a lady in what I think was a silver fiesta. No bike or rider, so wasnt sure what it was about.

This is a confused junction, as you come into the one way system FROM the university, it splits into 4 lanes, 2 go off toward New Cross and 2 toward the Cutty Sark, when you then get to the next stage, 2 lanes split back toward the university/Cutty Sark and 2 toward Deptford.

2 lanes shrinks into 1, right next to a pedestrian crossing and the whole thing is blocked with cars/buses and pedestrians seem to walk between the slow moving or stopped traffic.

Its a fkin nightmare, because vision is poor and the blocked road makes it a pain to get around, I always go outside of the traffic at this point as its easier to get around and I feel safer, have also put a horn on my bike as got fed up with people walking out in front of me and paying no attention, it works a treat.

Hope the rider is ok.

• The cyclist still has the broken arm.

And the driver will still have to compensate them.

• JAMIE, you got an air horn? ;-) I still haven't fitted mine yet. The world will be a more frightened place when I do. FEAR MY BIG NOISE!!!

• And the driver will still have to compensate them.

Yep, completely true. But that was what Lynx was saying about liability - doesn't matter about the law, it's us who get the broken shit. They just get dented body panels.

I ride to make sure I don't get any broken limbs. I think that's how vulnerable road users should be. Peds at crossings should still look, just in case the motorist hasn't spotted the red light.

As an analogy, it's illegal for men to rape women. That doesn't mean that women shouldn't take sensible precaistions with their personal safety. You're not going to throw yourself into risky situatons thinking "Well, I can always prosecute him for rape afterwards". Same goes for cyclists and collisions in my book.

fiesta? dunno, new model maybe (shit im old), the bigger one that looks more like the old astra. silver for sure.

yeah, that part of the road is really fun, you have to see it in one of those friday evenings when there is a school disco near by. you will easily need to refill your air horn 3 times just trying to get to woolwich road.

haha not sure if some girls really think like that!!!

No, if only, I just bought a clown horn, silver thing with a rubber ball on it for £2 in Decathlon, its loud enough to get everyones attention, and a bit of a laugh as well.

Yeah, thats the one, Joe, new shape. I have no idea where that road goes, wonder if she was looking for a short cut round the traffic.

£25 in Evans buys you an air horn you can pump up from your bike pump... ;-)

I bought my mate one too. He scares the fuck out of car drivers with it.

• Joemontana the guy who started this thread ask a stupid question of us."Are we all trying to be safer and look out for those drivers" ?
Not me Joe nothing will stop me from smugly riding through as many red traffic lights as possible.
My chum and I very nearly caused an accident yesterday as we smugly cycled cycled across a pelican crossing on red, giving the impression to a stopped car driver that he could also proceed who very nearly knock a bloke down who was validly walking across the zebra.Har har har, fucking hilarios. The car driver caught up with us,shouted some obcenities but I heard nothing over my headphones, and managed to give him the middle finger,"fuck you dude"We escaped up a one way street.Hey this is much more fun than Surrey.

• tarquin's growing on me i have to say.

• Sounds just like Mrs Myth to me.

• And the driver will still have to compensate them.

Not clear cut IMO But then I don't know enough to give a definite answer.

• No, Mrs Myth, there are thousands of us out there every day.
Look out for the hoodies lime green plastic sunglasses and our super kool stationary balancing skills.
Kool as a kool fixie dude.

• Rpm?

So many crossing styles in one place. Where is this amazing place, tarquin?

• Rpm?

my second thought; I believe they have a rota on the fridge for hipster-bashing duties.

I agree.

• Although it is legal to undertake slower moving/staionery traffic you have to apply some element of common sense if undertaking at 20mph!
Yes it is the cars fault if they turn left without looking/indicating but you should ride with the expectation that they will do it anyway.

totally agree with this, i got knocked off a couple weeks back flying downhill on seven sisters rd in a bus lane at about 20-25mph with slow/stationary traffic on my right. fuckwit delivery driver gets bored sitting in the line of traffic and pulls out left in front of me without indicating. suffice to say i ate shit, flew about 15 feet from my bike onto my boat race. Superficial roadrash only, but i've been a damn sight more cautious the last couple of weeks... in fact i wear a lid at all times now...
