  • Another way of tackling this problem might be to ‘encourage’ that….

All frames & bikes offered for sale through LFGSS to state the frame number, alongside a photograph of said frame number, in any advertisement. If there is no frame number this should be clearly stated, and an explanation given.

Is this really that big an issue? It seems like a very happy and inconvenient policy to enact for a problem that largely doesn't exist on this forum. Nothing I can do will remove risk from purchasing a frame (or even make a real reduction in that risk), and in the case of the first post on this thread I would say that a 50's or 60's frame with disk brake fittings is more of an alarm than the lack of a serial on the bottom bracket.

There are many reasonable explanations for why there isn't a serial... perhaps they had the frame repaired and the BB replaced? Perhaps they had the post code police stamped, moved house and then grinded off the old details (and serial whilst they were at it)? Perhaps it's a custom build? Who knows.

Before enacting policies that will impact so many sellers I would want to know that we have a real issue at hand. I'm just unconvinced. The level of complaints around classifieds is fewer than one a month. So for 10 issues a year you want to change the process for hundreds or thousands of adverts? Even though none of the 10 issues per year that I'm encountering relate in any way to stolen goods. (Nearly all are about sellers not providing good communication or posting items swiftly... very rarely it's something sold that doesn't quite match the description.)

So I just do not see an issue here, and unless you can all convince me otherwise I'm not inclined to change anything on here.
