• Why do we not see more success from Japanese riders on an international level?

This has the qualities of an FAQ. As with anything suspicious, it requires an examination of means, motive and opportunity.

    Means:
Are the attributes of a top Japanese Keirin rider easily transferable to an event contested at World Championship level?
Do any Japanese riders have the physique to take on athletes of Northern European and African ancestry?

    Motive:
If rising to medal level in international competition requires the sacrifice of at least a couple of seasons of Keirin racing, and given the uncertainty of success, is the prestige associated with World level success sufficient to generate additional income to replace the earnings lost by missing the Keirin racing?

    Opportunity:
Competition at World level is all but impossible without financial support from either your sporting association or commercial sponsors. Is either of these parties in Japan willing to invest in such a project?
