  • If you end with any spare I might be up for a set or two, Mash, I was late to this thread.

  • magnetic funness. does it work?

  • Ok, test results:

First off, these are crazy strong: They actually stick to the walls in my flat, due (I think) to lead in the paint or a waterproof course or something). It is impossible to 'pour' the bearings onto a table, since they instantly attract each other and kind of flow together like mercury. COOL.

Unfortunately, they are just a tiny bit too big :-( They go about 45% of the way into the allen key bolt head and stick there nice and snugly. BUT, since they stick out a touch, you can lever them out by hand.

    Oh well.

  • Sounds like they're just too big.

Get them between some sheets of aluminium oxide paper and get 'em sanded down a little!

  • Sounds like a plan.

A plan that I have no idea how to carry out.

    help?

  • Unlucky Mashton. All is not lost though, as we can still use them on the 6mm allen keys bolts under saddles, no?

  • ... and crank bolts

  • ... and if they are absolutely massive, they'd be really cool bar end plugs.

  • and the survey says..............

  • An Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman men walk into a pub...

    Ball bearing FAIL ?

  • can't spell.......etttttt eghhhhh!!???

  • mashty I'll take some, got some funny-sized imperial phil hub-bolts (1/4" 1& 5/16") on the mercian. Might add a little problem to any opportunists, especially in the 1/4".

These should fit into a quill allen hole? They're 6mm too, right? Probly Ahead bolt too, no?

Also modern phils? are they 6 or 8?

  • bulk buy fail

    Hold in some pliers. Sand.
    Rotate. Sand.

They'll end up marginally smaller, and if you keep track of the faces you've worked on, you could even make them a really nice fit for the heads.
I recommend sticking some sandpaper to a bit of wood and moving the ball bearing held in the pliers over it.

  • I'll keep a few of them stuck to a cunning place on my bike / in my bag and if you are after any then grab them when you see me.

make sure your credit cards and phone are safely away from them in your bag. ;)

  • Matt, if they'll fit 6mm allen key bolts then I'll alleviate you of possession of a number yet to be decided.

    Beers or cash as payment.

  • bumping this thread.

so, what size did you order? and what size did you try to fit them into?

I am considering ordering some magnets and I'm in the process of figuring out what sizes would be required.

I'd need a magnet to fit inside a 5mm and a 6mm bolt. any clues as to what size magnet I should go with?

  • Hmm, it was time ago that I bought them - they have all been lost or eaten by children in the meantime. I'll see if I can dig out some receipt info.

  • I bought the S3 ones from this page, so would probably go for the S2 sized ones if I got them again.

  • I have currently glued some ball bearings in my bolt holes but was wondering how well these actually worked. Did they stay in or tend to vibrate out?

    thanks for the tip.

can they be picked out...or is a strong magnet required to remove them?
