DJ has only been on here for 2 years, wow. Stustaff don't worry about it. In two years time you'll be doing the same thing! Forums have never been the best way of presenting information, they are geared for discussion. Setting up some sort of Wiki which pertains all of the starting info would be handy, stickies and the lists we have do wonders, but you still need to know where to look.

haha, repped by the noobs.
I have to side with DJ, he has been here a long time and given a lot more than some guy coming and asking silly questions.
I only said that to stop DJ getting too wound up, not trying to start some noob uprising. There are so many people that come on and ask the same shit over and over again. Like I said though, I've been there. Just gotta ignore it.

There is a wiki somewhere... i think you can find it using google*.
There was a long discussion back when this was all yellow fields, and I think it was agreed that a collective wiki on here wasn't necessary, as there's Sheldon (RIP) etc. already covering it, and things like, you know, personal preference got in the way.

I loved how the forum used to look, the banner that was a London sky-line that soon became a London sky-line with the millennium spok. Epic.

^ Miss it. I liked the photo banners that came after that, too.

here we go. eh ? i hear you say.
Forum newcomers get offended when they ask questions already answered a million times and still wonder why forum matriarchs get uppity.
Retorts like "why be so nasty" or "you're not being nice" (same thing really) or suchlike is just a bit fucking annoying.thing is, this ain't a paid for service, no one has to answer your questions, this isn't a shop or a service provider. It's a forum (state the obvious, ok !) with lots and lots of information neatly and readily accessible in the search function. I tell you it's brilliant. In fact, i know it's brilliant , i use it all the time.
So search newcomers, or you'll be burned down with your silly questions....

ill be honest here any search engine should only be considered if you are to embarassed to publicly state your problem.
some more sensible advice would be to pop down your LBS and enquire there i think you will find them a little more polite plus you get the bonus of actually talking to a real person.

True, I'm just an algorithm that Velicio's written.

so every thing you type in a search engine is because your scared to ask and embarrassed ?

I have raised the subject of my first thread previously and often when dealing with noobs.
I am a shameless cunt, so its water off a ducks back. Very few of us have an immaculate history here, we all make mistakes, get it wrong etc. Its about how we proceed from that point.
Does someone criticising you leave you all upset or are they pointing out there may be an alternative way to respond?
You may notice that I did not get upset when Clefty suggest i use the search. I actually used the fucking thing. I followed the advice and survived.
I came along, got flamed and also got the answers I was looking for. Strangely I found myself being roasted amusing, a number of the posters on that thread I now consider friends - though fuck I was frightened of "Clefty" when i first joined!
I thought my initial advice on this thread was perfectly pleasant but it was thrown back at me. Part of any learning curve is going and doing research, it wont all be spoon fed to us. Frequently the reading around a topic will broaden and strengthen our knowledge, so reading a few threads on chain tension may actually increase your overall knowledge and teach you about the maintenance, why chains might slip, the dangers of a loose chain, the mechanical inefficiencies of an overly tight chain ...

I'd stay fixed man; I was worried about it at first, but I didn't have the option of a flipflop hub so just went out and tried it... I must say I absolutly love it and am glad I didn't have the singlespeed to fall back on...
As for ratio, I'm sure it's going to be good enough to get started on (they're not going to sell you a totally useless ratio). When/If you "feel" that you need to do a bit of a tweaking, you'll then know what you want.
As for setting up your bike, when you're seated, your leg at the lowest point of the pedal should be almost straight and your handlebars where-ever is comfortable about 4 inches below the seat.
All this is from a newbie as well, but I spent about 2-3 months looking around here and on Sheldon's site before buying one. So if any of what I have said is wrong, let the flaming commence ;)

• #98
Cheers Monsta thats useful info,
when switching I assume as the ratio is so similiar there is no need to alter the chain?
I may ride into work on the single speed and change to fixed for my lunchtime ride until i feel 100% on it.
-
• #99
do you have foot retention and brakes?
-
• #100
I ride with a front brake and Power Grips for foot retention, I'd seriously suggest you use both!
I find I am not using the front brake at all (a total of 1 yesterday when some div stipped out right in front of me). Just get used to the fixed aspect, if you're constantly swapping it's not giong to help your muscle memory etc...
DJ, easy man. Hypertension can be a killer.
