  • **I'm sure I saw this somewhere on the forum but I wouldn't have thought to do it without seeing it done so I'm sharing the knowledge right here.

I bought the lock for 99p in, guess where, the 99p store! Not a bad investment. if it stops some opportunist with an Allen key doing away with my nice, perfectly broken in B17..**

  • an old bit of chain wrapped in inner tube is a slightly more elegant and stronger option.

  • Most people here use old chains I reckon. As in, bicycle chains. I'm sure somebody will provide a picture.

    Oh, and £1 please.

  • Might sound stupid but I've welded the nuts and allen key bolt on my Brooks. There ain't no crackhead getting that off!

  • i think chains in innertubes look shit, even though this would take 10 seconds to cut with garden secateurs it still looks better than a black turd coming out of the back of your saddle wrapping its self around your frame.

Ball bearings are the best option, then seat saver cables.

sounds a bit stupid, but as long as you dont want to sell it or change it ever its fine. I'm assuming youve also welded your seatpost clamp?

  • it is quite stupid since there's no way you can removed it, a ball bearing plus strong glue is more than enough.

took me half hour to prick it out.

  • Quick release and a bag is quite a good one.
Not many bikes with no saddles get stolen to boot.

  • ^haha!

6 magnetic ball bearings available off ebay for £2.50, fit 5mm allen key bolts perfectly, easy to remove. assuming the theif doesn't have a magnet.

I've seen (from your shop), at least 2 track frames with cracks on the seatpost area due to seatpost QR. IMHO it is a really bad idea, on a track bike people have the wrong idea to tighten everything too much, it will very rapidly weaken any frame, and QR clamps on a everyday basis might be pushing it too far.

Good point. I wonder how many potential thieves this deters?

On the odd occasions I take my front wheel with me I always think I'm doing it to save the wheel itself. It's never really occurred to me that this may also be the only reason the rest of the bike is still there when I get back! (yes, I'm an idiot)

user error does not render the method mistaken.

True, but i suppose (e.g.), a lugged track frame, which is already used on the road, not track, etc, etc, plus the fatigue of constant clamping-unclamping, will all in the end shorten the frames life, no? One of those frames seen at BLB was ....mine, bought used from the shop with a QR seatpost clamp, I was told all this at Roberts in Croydon, when I took the frame to be repaired. Mr. Roberts was actually the one telling me QR seatpost on a track bike was a bit silly and inadequate.

  • dont leave your bike in east london

I wasn't aware we were being specific to lugged steel track frames.

And besides Roberts built my Dad a Dogs Bolx that was steel with a QR seat bolt. No issues there.

  • dont lock your bike up anywhere. Always keep it with you.

    Fixed.

Yes. I'm increasingly fond of removing bits as it means the bike can't be ridden away.
I've been pondering taking my bar/quill combo with me for longer leavings.

  • I might even gets me some of these...

... mebbe accompanied with a big arrow sticker saying "Look Mum, no pedals (braks, saddle, wheel - delete as appropriate)!"

  • ha!

  • Removable seat stays FTW.

  • And poisonous gas dispensing anti-theft canister? Looks like that bike is smoking.

    Don't use your nob then

    It was healthy back then.
