  • To illustrate, Peru was ranked 85th in this year's press freedom index by Reporters Without Borders.

The US was 108th. Russia was 153rd.

    Not according to wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_Freedom_Index

    US 20th but 108th (extra-territorial)

So let be clear under what situation they are 108th.

  • .....OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    etc

  • Fuck that shit. Cheryl and Ashley have been broken up and dissolved in a vat of caustic acid!

    Fixed!

NB is it just me or is "caustic" the presses favourite new word?

  • She will take him back.. she has to!

  • This:

Managed to fill up about 15-20 minutes of BBC news this morning, what a joke. We all knew that halfing teenage pregnancy rates in 10 years wasn't going to happen, so let's get everyone in again to talk about how we are going to teach it more in schools and blame the parents of these people.

  • Polis visit a shop in Scotland to give them a friendly warning about selling an 'Anyone But England' world cup t-shirt. Fuck. Me. Ragged.

  • Why does the BBC Breakfast programme need 2 weather people? They only speak for 3 minutes every half hour. I understand national and local news may be different (except London as London is where it's at). Why is the prettier older women outside while the market stall lady gets to be indoors?

  • Just discovered all the 24 news channels next to BBC news24. There's a french one, a russian one, a japanese one, al jazeera and (fuck me!) fox news. Being an uber-geek, i like to watch these for the different perspective. Except for fox news, which is more car-crash voyeurism.

Anyway, the breaking news was that the coalition government in the netherlands had collapsed due to an argument about how long dutch troops were gonna be in afganistan for (thats right folks, its not just the brits in afganistan, not that you'd know for the media reports).

This was quite important news so i scanned the uk papers for their take on it. The result... f all, just tiger woods and ashley cole.

  • Yr just a bit late on the Dutch thing - it was headline news on the Guardian site on Monday. Y'know - when it happened...

  • Yeah, lots of coverage in the UK, a few days ago... Also, why all this bashing news orgs for focusing on their demographics?

Local news covers local news because it's read by local people, as with national and international coverage. I don't see the problem. I'd rather not be plowing through thousands of stories about local council decisions in Spain, car accidents in Switzerland or snow storms in Moscow when I'm more interested in my own city.

There's a variety of places to find news, which is just fine by me.

  • Radio 4's feedback just ran a long item about how lots and lots of people had taken them to task over the idiotic Tiger Woods broadcast. As always, some news-driven editorial slimeball was on hand to explain what was so good about it. News values and other gobbledygook. I pick up on Feedback a lot; I have never yet heard anyone say, "Yes, in hindsight that was a bit of an error." Just in your face with media bullshit and how they can't possible ever be wrong in estimating what their audience is interested in.

The best bit of that sort of thing for a long time was the 'defence' of the shit London Olympics logo.

  • Who reads the news threads?
    Oh.
    Nicely merged.

  • You can have your pound back...

  • Well it is news, in some ways. No exactly unexpected*, but given his background, to finally come out will have financial and social implications for him.

Luckily he's probably so loaded, he'll be immune to much of the prejudice, but as much as he may be a figure of fun, he'll probably now be some sort of role model (mccarthy, I don't mean in the hair stakes).

    • ah, that popbitch story about the balcony from years ago.
  • isn't this thread called NOT news anyway?

  • Oh, Mick will carry on liking his 'music', anyway*. ;)

    • I can't remember ever consciously hearing one of his songs.

    She Bangs, apparently.

Thanks for my pound J. I'll buy you a cider with it for being so generous.

  • Not with the increase in the price of ciderz you won't!

The Ricky section on the BBC Latin series was quite good - showed how much of a cross over act he was in light of Miami Sound Machine etc.

  • Hilarious isnt it? who ever doubted he was as mincy as your mums preserve cupboard at christmas?!

  • Nice analogy T. Smooth.

    #ciderofferretracted.

  • Breaking news!! News reported by news reporters in their respective newspapers!
