Well, I know of a few people that have run thier cranks on the wrong side (mostly by mistake!) and don't think any of them had their pedals fall off... I also beleive you can get some cranks that are set up to run on the normally off side...
If I'm not to knackered my intention was to spend some time this week rebuilding one of my bikes into working order... One thing I was going to do was change th cranks... I might put them on the wrong side and see if the pedalscome off! :)
oh and the dedicated braking surface thing could have been said the first time they put a dedicated braking surface on rims?!
