You could run it on the non-drive side to avoid any oil issues... Not really any safer or less prone to damage... Unless you ran a bash gaurd? Actually with a bash guard it would be safer than a wheel mounted disc brake?!
Any mechanical (dis)advantage to having it there?! It must be one or the other actually... At a guess wouldn't the friction required to brake on the chain ring be less than on the rear hub?! As the force hasn't been geared up?
