In the few "significant" crashes I've had, if my steel forks didn't fold, the alu bars did. I haven't written off a carbon component yet - even after a couple endo/over the handlebar-type prangs. You can't extend anecdotal incidents into a universal rule. If cheap carbon frames were that dodgy, the forums would be full of horror stories - I haven't noticed them? Bear in mind I'm kind of biased - I bought a Focus Cayo.
