Just to get the obvious out of the way first, i assume you're holding both cottons tight by hand until the first few stitches are in place yes?

Was never taught this, but then I only had two lessons. Is this because it's tougher fabric as I didn't need to do this with calico? I usually just backstitch after a few and it's fine.

btw the cotton is coming out the needle after about 10cm's.
