It depends, what job do you do are you seated correctly have you had a recent accident, there are so many variables so you should try to give out more information. If you need an Osteopath I can recommend one near Kensington.

Cheers Diable.
No recent accidents, seated correctly, temping at the moment so not doing anything that involves me overexerting myself.Youre right about the variables but Im pretty sure it is from straining my neck daily by looking over my shoulder. Occam's razor would lead me to believe that this is probably the main reason.

I can't help you but can add that I've recently started cycling to work & I too have started getting really bad neck pain, I was thinking it was from a combo of leaning forward & looking up putting strain on the neck muscles - coincidentally I sometime get the exact same pain & neck stiffness from playing too much CoD sat in the same position.

It never happens when I look forward. Pain only happens when I look over my right shoulder (pain is only on right side of neck) so I reckon it probably different to what youre experiencing

Go to an osteopath and get your neck and shoulders reset (cracked back into position). It worked for me although my neck and shoulder issues were from a crash. My osteopath also does acupuncture and if you plead poverty charges a mininum fee of 30 quid per session. He's in the archway area.

Im guessing one of these two maybe?

deletes massive post about ergo-mouse

Fuck it, I typed it even if its no help...
Until 3 weeks ago, I had terrible pain in my neck and behind my right shoulder blade. I've been having regular deep tissue massages during which I am absolutely monstered by a large hairy man for half an hour a time. Its good for a few days, then fucked again.
Purchased an ergo-mouse and my problems were solved in a fortnight. It forces you to maintain better posture and operate your mouse directly in front of your shoulder, rather than to the right. Whe I use a normal mouse, its absurd how far to the right I was using it. Your hand sits vertically rather than horizontally.
They are supposed to be used in conjunction with a keyboard with the number pad on the left rather than the right. Have not bought that yet
Expensive, but Im on it 50 hours a week... more than my bike :(

If I raise the stem height Im still gonna have to look over my right shoulder, its the actual strain of leaning round that is causing the pain I think. Also if it helps Ive recently put higher rise risers on my bike and the pain is dstill there.
I was only asking on here as I thought it might be a common problem as all cyclists have to look over their right shoulder all the time.

Go and see a physio. Check the knee pain thread, there is a contact in there.

Now I have that strange pain in my ovaries when I pedal too hard uphill? Any ideas why?
-

Do you have a large drop from saddle to bars? I used to and after about a year of riding in that position daily I had pretty much permanent neck pain, exactly as you describe.
Initially changed from drops to risers and a stem with a rise too on that frame and now have a more sensible frame that fits me well. Pain disappeared almost over night, have no problems now.

Ok- second, slightly more well written post:
- Take some time off the bike- before seeing a physio, or anything else- just rest it.
When I took up Hurling my neck was destroyed after training sessions due to the weight of the helmet and the looking around- few days off- happy as larry. - Stretch. Simple stretches. start with your chin resting gently on your chest whilst standing. Hold. slowly move chin till touches a shoulder. Hold. Slowly return to centre. Repeat on other side.
When you start feeling this is doing nothing- include a P+R stretch in it- so when you stretch- take some time and push your forehead against your hand, your temples against your hand and the back of your head against your hands- pushing with the neck muscles- not the hands- in the obvious direction and then return to stretching. - Test your neck pain in a neutral spine position. Stand up straight and look around you. Just Look Around you.
- strengthen your lower back.
- Strengthen your chest and shoulder muscles. don't worry about the upper back- most people over strengthen this.
- If all else isn't working and you've had a week off cycling- go see a physio.
I love physios- but they are hard to get to.
Oh and dont HTFU, neck pain sucks balls

Not a common problem especially not for me, since I need to use my sight and not my ears.
see a doctor.

Neck pain - RSI
could the name and pain be related?! What is yur job?!
have you tried looking over your left shoulder for a while?
-
• #24
I used to get terrible neck pains until very recently when I had physiotherapy. The pain and the tightness of the muscles themselves meant I couldn't even move my head. The physio swiftly pinpointed it to a posture problem and through a combo of physio-informed exercises, hot showers with the water directed at the neck and shoulders, sitting up properly and sleeping with only 1 thinnish pillow, the pains have gone. Oh and a bit of good ol' HTFU which has already been mentioned :P As much as it may hurt though keep the muscles moving, very important.

Osteopath.
In the meantime, Thai massage. It doesn't remove the source of your problem, but will make you feel better.
Had a quick search but cant find anything that similar apart from Paul- Michel and his neck and wrist problems and that thread wasnt much help. If there is a thread on this that Ive missed then direct me to it and ill ask Velocio nicely if he can close this one down. Anyway....
Does anybody else get awful pain in their neck from looking over their shoulder. Even if I turn my body to look behind me I still have to look over the shoulder a bit and its that strain that seems to be causing me awful neck pain.
Its now constant pain (when looking over right shoulder) on and off the bike.
Is this RSI? Does anybody know any good ways to remedy this? I was thinking about sports massage therapy but not sure if thats the way to go plus I bet it costs a fortune.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Angus
