  • And all frankly irrelevant as the core issue is the riders competence with regards to their machine.

  • Maximum Deceleration--Panic Stops

The fastest that you can stop any bike of normal wheelbase is to apply the front brake so hard that the rear wheel is just about to lift off the ground. In this situation, the rear brake cannot contribute to stopping power, since it has no traction.

it seems to me that brakeless riders are unwilling to concede that it is more dangerous, that they would be safer with a front brake, but that they do it anyway

I would also be safer with a helmet, 2x mini D, cycle insurance, wearing a condom, not eating after 8pm, drink less, wash fruit before I eat it, catch it kill it bin it, dont step on the cracks, remember remember the 5th of november, avoid gypsies, double lock the front door, mind the gap, cover my pin number

safer as in, safer to other people. people can be a risk to themselves all the like, but do not have the right to risk other people's safety unreasonably.

i have been thinking of another sport/activity with a similar situation. one i thought of was rockclimbing. most people would use a safety rope, but there are people that don't. hadn't thought passed this.

  • And if the free climbers climb where there are pedestrians that they could fall on it would be the same.

I suppose the free climbers that climb office blocks are in that camp.

  • Some established posters and velo libre have really shown themselves up in this thread

  • If your actions don't affect others then you can express your freedom.

If you pile into another road user (human or metal) due to your actions then you may be considered negligent.

I'll defend your right to freedom of action, but not your freedom to be reckless with others.

I enjoy riding my bike, and I'd like others to enjoy my company and freedom.

  • I am listening to Kenny Rogers.
